Newman's score worked quite well in the film, although less so on its own. I hope they do something more traditional and Barry-like this time out, as we're finally getting the gunbarrel, Q/M/Moneypenny in place and possibly even Number 1 himself.

I remember having the same buzz when the trailers and clips for For Your Eyes Only came out with Blofeld and the helicopter.

But it just ended up as the ridiculous pre-credits. A huge disappointment. I think it all related to the spat between EON and McClory about the Blofeld/SPECTRE rights.

So this time I shall reserve judgment.

EON lost the rights to the SPECTRE organization in the 1970s. Bond was supposed to face off against Blofeld in The Spy Who Loved Me (which makes sense as Lewis Gilbert directed both films and the main plot is very similar in both), but was unable to due to an injunction from McClory.

The bald main a wheelchair (credited as just that) was not officially Blofeld, but it did resemble the OHMSS Blofeld (right down to the neck injury he sustained from that film). The fact that Bond was visiting Tracy's grave also tied them together.

Either way it was a very unsatisfactory inclusion. I think the new film is handling these throwbacks much better. I'd love to see a new SPECTRE trilogy, with the next film having Bond going on a vendetta for what happens at the end of SPECTRE.

True, but then the book Bond didn't immediately go on a vendetta after the events of OHMSS. It really was a broken Bond. It would be good to see that element of Bond come out. We've never really had a proper screen version of You Only Live Twice but would require incredible artistic bravery on the part of the filmmakers similar to that for Casino Royale(2006).

Perhaps, but I'm not sure how patient audiences would be with a mopey, ineffective hero (see The Dark Knight Returns). I'd love for them to use some untapped elements from the books. Maybe Bond's attempted assassination of M due to brainwashing (from The Man with The Golden Gun).
