I'm planning a trip that includes Munich, Barcelona, and London for the last two weeks of September (Yes we will be in Munich for Oktoberfest) and I was wondering if anyone here is located in one of those cities or close enough to come and say hi. Mostly I am interested in meeting for a beer or maybe lunch while I am there.

The one disappointing thing about London was I saw not one man dressed like John Steed. HUGE disappointment.

Well it is a short time in London but I want to experience the proper British beer scene and a few pubs and such. We will be doing one castle outside the city so we aren't stuck there all day. But as someone who loves his beers, experiencing proper British pubs is a big part of the experience.

If you find yourself in or near Covent Garden whilst you're in London, I heartily recommend the Lamb & Flag pub:

Sirusjr, while I enjoyed my visit in London, I was rather horrified by the prices of food and drink. When we got to Barcelona, my husband ordered a lot more wine and beer as they were much cheaper. Really loved Barcelona, food and wine.

Shame you haven't got more time, because in London you can fall into the trap of paying through the nose for lager that's so cold you can hardly taste it, and bitter that's so warm that a squirrel could use it as a hot tub. And judging by the taste, probably has.

Venturing even a few miles into the suburbs in any direction might be rewarded in both the price and the taste departments.

When in London, make sure to take the Fuller's brewery tour (Chiswick). Fuller's ist one of the best breweries in England, and their tour (including a tasting, of course) is among the best of its kind. They also have a shop where you can buy many of their "out of print" beers like the very old Vintage Ales (last time I visited they went back as far as 2005!).

They also own a number of pubs in the city where you can get their "regular" beers. Like the "Mad Bishop & Bear" under the roof of Paddington Station, which is one of my favorite London pubs. In the book "The CAMRA Guide to London's Best Beer, Pubs & Bars" it is listed among the Top 20 pubs in the city.

Another is "The Chandos" near Trafalgar Square, opposite of the National Portrait Gallery. They're owned by Samuel Smith Brewery, and, accordingly, only serve their own beers - but they're all good. They make, by far, the best cloudy wheat in England ("Organic Wheat"), a far above average lager ("Pure Brewed Lager") and some nice bottled beers.

Though I'd have to say that many of the best pubs in England are to be found outside of London.

Should the castle outside of London that you will be visiting be Windsor Castle I'll strongly suggest a stop at "The King and Castle", a JD Wetherspoon pub opposite Windsor Castle. They offer a good selection of real ales and a nice atmosphere. As a matter of fact, they were the ones that converted me to British beer a few years ago when I spent 5 days in Windsor. wink

Beer prices in England are high (though not as high as in Paris, Dublin, or Oslo) - and they differ quite a lot depending where you are. The mentioned "Pure Brewed Lager" by Samuel Smith costs UKP 4.24 at "The Chandos" in London, while I spent just UKP 2.82 for the same beer in another Sam Smith-owned pub in Scarborough, North Yorkshire.

Another that used to stock a lot of real ale was The Dickens inn - edge of st katherines dick by tower hill.

Just where ever you go, even in busy places, keep your eye out for pickpockets /muggers and dont flash the cash anywhere and dont advertise yourself.

Well that applies generally to places people travel. Though more and more many places I go seem to be just fine carrying around a small amount of cash and otherwise using a credit card most places. Do you need cash for the Tubes etc? Or is there a reasonably priced transit pass for a few days?

I have a bag from Pacsafe that generally carries everything wherever I travel and allows it to lock and can't be cut due to some chainmail under the fabric. It serves me well most places and has also become my general everyday bag.

Right now it seems the one castle we'll get out to will be Arundel. Based oh photos that one seems more interesting.

I certainly found plenty of pubs where we'll be staying. One night in Intercontinental Park Lane (with free night credit) and one in Holiday Inn Mayfair. First place I looked was a local craft brewery's web site of where their stuff is served and another looking for places that people say have the best shepherd's pie (my husband's favorite).

I will check out some of the suggested places and see if they are close to where we will be. I'm quite familiar with cask ales locally. It has become common at a lot of the breweries to have at least one cask fairly regularly. One brewery called New English (run by a Britt) almost constantly has two casks available and pouring.

One last bump in case anyone is able to meet up in these places. Leaving in a few weeks.

Don't live in in any of those places, but I've been to all of them. Great cities, all around!

Not far from The Cinema Store. I wonder, is it still open?

For London I'll be staying in Crestwood area one night and in Park Lane another night so I found some solid pubs around there.

Food wise there are a few places that are nice and close to the hotels and have good reviews for some traditional pub fare. I'll hit up The Grenadier on Wilton Row and The Windmill on Mill st.

I'm also hoping to visit Holborn Whippet - Bloomsbury, Bree Louise in Euston, And possibly The Lyric. Got plenty of other options as well if those don't work out.

In Munich I'm still trying to figure out if one of the craft breweries will have a brewpub open by the time I get there. If I can't visit Crew Republic directly I will try to find them in a bar around town. But I did find a few good bars like Tap House and RedHot. I would rather drink local craft than the bigger stuff.

Be warned, though. I found Austrian beer rather disappointing. Much like Germany, it seems to revolve around pilsner and wheat beer. Not much in terms of craft selection. But maybe it's because I never found the right bars.

Well if nothing else Ayinger has a bar in Downtown Munich, and their Doppelbock is one of the best. I don't expect to be impressed by the Festival beer served during Oktoberfest though I will give it a try one morning as part of the festivities. Plus I have learned to appreciate the qualities of a really good lager/pilsner from a few local brands so perhaps if I do get stuck ordering pilsners I will get something super fresh that I actually enjoy.

But the bars I found were on a list of craft beer bars so I should be able to find something good there and I also found a good bottle shop that I can always go to and get some Belgian beers if I have trouble.
