After a refresh

Electra and Iphigenia sound like they could have been played by Aristotle, himself. Small ensemble, source like in the main.
Phaedra has some nice simple tracks, some pop, a couple of songs and one of dialogue and SFX.
Tito is more listenable, if somewhat subdued for a war film, some male choir humming march.

I can add 'The Man with the Carnation' (Greek title; O Anthropos me to garyfallo) from 1980. Is a very nice score to my ears. Contains the singing of Margarita Zorbala (one of the more 'extreme' voices that I really like) and some choir pieces as well as harmonica. Tender moments on flute or guitar as well. Rather nice.

If you're into the Greek Folk Music style of Theodorakis there are two soundtracks with upbeat folky tunes; 'Greece without ruins' from 1964 (with about half of the soundtrack composed by Stavros Xarhakos) and 'The Island of Aphrodite' (a documentary on Cyprus) from 1966. Some of the tunes he used in these films can sometimes also be heard in other works by Theodorakis. Another soundtrack of this kind is 'Synoikia to Oneiro' from 1961. You can find it on YouTube I guess.

I also like his song cycles (those are no soundtracks!), for instance 'Are We Living in Another Country?' (1985), 'Epivatis' (Passenger, 1981), Faidra Tragoudia Agapis (1985) and 'Odysseia' (2007). Another CD I really like is 'Oracle' (1995) with a live concert, including some songs in English. Great stuff! There are so many Theodorakis recordings out there, but mostly available only in Greece. A great way to sample some of his best songs is listening to two double disc sets on Columbia/Sony 'Ta Tragoudia Mou 1959-1986' A' Meros/B' Meros (set A and B). These were all newly recorded with rather nice arrangements by Greece's top singers like Farantouri, Kayaloglou, Demetriadi, Pandis, Moraitis, Thomopoulos as well as Theodorakis himself (although that is not a recommendation per se). There is a one disc edition of a selection of these songs "Mikis Theodorakis All Time Greatest Hits". The old 4LP-box carried the same title. I had this box from 1986 but was very happy when the songs came out on the two CD-sets in 1996.

couvee, Thanks for your information. I first heard Theodorakis in high school--when Z came out, so I bought all the stuff i could find--those albums released on U.S. labels, and even some of those weren't easy to find. It's not as if the bins at the local shops were spilling over with copies of Day the Fish Came Out. I also have an album from the early 70s on MGM called Theme Used in Z and Other Songs Composed and Sung by Mikis Theodorakis--or something like that. Haven't played it in quite awhile. I'll have to dig it out. I think it's just the composer and a piano.

First post is from 2015.

I really like his score for SHADOW OF THE CAT.

Having said that, I've barely scratched the surface of his immense body of work (literature too). And a life truly worthy of a good biography. In addition to the ten already written.

The film SHADOW OF THE CAT was recently released on Blu-ray by Indicator as part of a box set "Hammer Volume Six: Night Shadows. Amongst the substantial extras, David Huckvale (author of "Hammer Film Scores and the Musical Avant-Garde") provides an interesting appreciation of Theodorakis' score - noting in particular the heavy use of ostinato and the main title motif's similarity to JAWS! The score for the film was apparently sold by Sotherbys for £4,000.

Damn! Sorry to hear it. Let's do a new thread on it rather than putting it here in the birthday thread.
