Anyone here ever accidentally tear one of their toenails off? Well, I just did and it wasn't pretty (and, no, I won't post a pic.) Was walking around bear foot in my backyard, of all places, and was steeping up on a large sized rock that was in my garden and then slipped off, which sent the nail tearing and hanging off my big toe. One vicodin and a beer later, I'm feeling better about it all, but, yikes, watch out! Oz

Funny that, both big toe nails in the past six months! Right foot - It grows a bit thick after it being surgically removed way back in the sixties. I was trying to cut it with my big heavy duty clippers while having a bath (as you do), & I must have pulled it & ripped it half off. The thing is, it didn't hurt that much, but I couldn't finish the job off as that would have been a bit painful, so I put my foot in a bowl of cold water for a couple of minutes, & then gave it a sharp tug & it was off. A bit tender for a day, but after that, fine. Left foot - I was walking around barefoot & kicked a wire I had trailing around & the wire went under the nail, it lifted the nail up a tiny bit & was a little bit painful for a day or two, then OK, but a week later it just sort of fell off. I feel much better getting that lot off my chest!

And the local anaesthetic was one of the most painful things I've ever felt when it was starting to work. Actually that's bought back some memories, when I had the first operation on my toe (around 1963, Hammersmith Hospital) they tied a rubber tube around the base of my toe & injected a whole syringe of anaesthetic in the toe, & that was sooo painful! When I had to have it done again I refused & insisted they gave me a general, they said no, I threw a huge wobbley & got my way, I wasn't the kind of person to make a fuss, but I couldn't go through that pain again. Funny, I'd forgotten all about that. So, away from toes, everything you've done & seen (& I'm nearly 65, so that's a lot) is all in there, even if you can't remember, it just needs a key to unlock it.

I lost my left big toe nail during a Martial Arts sparring contest. We were both wearing full protective body armour and going full out, when I (stupidly as it turned out) saw the opportunity to fire in a left roundhouse kick, sadly I didn't time it quite right and hit the edge of his body armour by mistake, and off went the nail. Bloody Hell, that hurt, blood flew in all directions and needless to say, I lost the contest. The nail did eventually grow back and I learned to be more careful in future sparring contests.

I once slammed my left thumb in a car door after getting out of the passenger side. That hurt a lot. Don't do that. The nail got a black bruise under it and later fell off. It eventually grew back perfectly, though.

It shouldn't be a big deal. Like Francis, I lost one once jogging in ill-fitting jogging shoes, but it grew back ... in fact I think I may have done it twice. I didn't bother seeking medical advice. Jogging trainers should be neither too tight nor too loose, since the toe does actually flop about in the latter case. Like the above poster, I also lost a thumbnail once moving a desk, when the desk door swung shut on my thumb, as I and another guy were lifting it. The resultant bruise eased it off. Again, it grew back. Strangely though, in that case it was considerably softer and weaker than the other thumbnail for quite some time after. I never figured that out.

Yeah, I haven't cut my big toenails in 3 years. They looked like Jedward when Jedward was a thing, and they've been growing since then. A couple of times, barefoot, I've caught one on something and torn it off. It hurt quite badly. Apparently they've grown too thick to be cut by scissors and will have to be sawn off (!) You must have a large sock bill.
