INTRADA Announces:

HOMEWARD BOUND: THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY
Composed and Conducted by BRUCE BROUGHTON
INTRADA Special Collection Vol. 330

Intrada's latest installment of music from the Disney catalog is an expanded re-issue from the 1993 film Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, more than doubling the length of the original release that just ran 30 minutes. Composer Bruce Broughton’s skill at underscoring action and emotion are on display throughout the film’s lengthy score, a particular challenge in this case since the main characters are household pets. He introduces these protagonists with his opening, comic flourishes, and underscores their relationship with the family and their contrasting points of view.

Homeward Bound is comprised of four basic themes, three of which are introduced in the main title. The opening guitar represents the narrating pup, Chance, and is followed almost immediately by a sweet sustained theme in the strings which is associated with the human family the animals live with. After a brief (and typical) interruption by Chance’s theme, the violins briefly play Sassy the Cat’s theme. It is not until “The Journey Begins” that we hear the broad and heroic main theme associated with Shadow, the older dog, and with the adventure itself.

Homeward Bound is a remake of Disney's earlier The Incredible Journey. This time the story is set near the Sierra Nevada mountains in California and features voiceovers from Sally Fields, Michael J. Fox, and Don Ameche. After the pets are dropped off at a friend's ranch while their family vacations, the animals think they've been left for good and escape the ranch into the wild wilderness in search of their family.

Bruce Broughton
Label: Intrada Special Collection Volume ISC 330
Date: 1993
Time: 70:51
Tracks: 31
Price: $19.99

One of Intrada's earliest Bruce Broughton soundtracks gets a complete makeover! More than twice the music now! Broughton scores this Walt Disney Pictures classic, Duwayne Dunham directs, Robert Hays, Kim Greist star, Michael J. Fox, Don Ameche, Sally Field provide voices for two dogs and one cat. Warmhearted 1993 tale is a remake of Disney's own 1963 live-action adaptation of Sheila Burnford's novel chronicling the incredible journey three house pets make to reunite with their owners. Broughton anchors outdoor tale with expansive, diatonic main theme, but judiciously holds back on it until perilous journey gets underway. Ideas both humorous, dramatic play first and throughout.

Initial 30-minute CD release captured several highlights but necessarily omitted many sequences. Amongst new material is powerful "Sassy In The River", dramatic "Shadow's A Hero", complete dog pound escape sequence with rousing interpolation of Lalo Schifrin's "Mission: Impossible" theme, intense "Shadow's Fall", wild "Birdzilla", many others. Entire CD presented from two-track digital stereo session masters made by Armin Steiner at 20th Century Fox Studios Scoring Stage in November 1992, vaulted in pristine condition courtesy Disney.

Informative liner notes by Jeff Bond plus flipper-style booklet design and colorful graphics from Joe Sikoryak. Bruce Broughton conducts. Intrada Special Collection release available while quantities and interest remain!

I not trying to sound unappreciative, but I'm just curious why we didn't get David Shire's rejected score.

Shire was asked about in an FSM interview and he replied:

They didn't like it. Katzenberg didn't like it. I worked with the director on that picture for three months like I did with Walter Murch on RETURN TO OZ. I came up with all the themes, one by one--he loved them all and as we got to work on them I met with him every Monday for week after week. I went to Germany to record the score, but the orchestra there was not good enough, so we scrapped those sessions and then I re-recorded them in LA. Then Katzenberg wanted to hear a cut of the picture with the score on it and the voices for the animals--and I remember going over to his house and we sat there while he watched it. He smiled and shook my hand and said, "Fine, fine," and by the time I got home there was a call from my agent saying he scrapped my score and wanted a new one. He also fired the three people who were the principal voices of the animals and he almost fired the director. But he brought someone else in to work with him. So it was just a totally disappointing experience because that was the last score I thought was going to get me back in the loop. It was a big, romantic, fun picture with the Disney stamp on it and that was a huge disappointment. Since then I've hardly gotten called for a picture.

JF: Have you ever considered making that music available in some way--as a promo maybe?

DS: No, I haven't thought about it much. Frankly, it was so painful I never went back and even listened to it. But we'd have to get the master tapes and mix it because we never finished it. I have a tape of it somewhere. If somebody wanted to put it out and thought it was good enough to put out, I'd have no objections

The original orchestra was the Munich Symphony Orchestra.

He also spoke about it in another interview (listed on my Rejected Film Score site). I also asked him about it in and interview I did, among other scores not used, but the reply basically just duplicated what he said in the FSM interview.

Can you imagine what a score that must have been?

I wondered this, myself. Maybe, it's a WOLFEN scenario where the Shire album might well be in the works.

As for the Broughton, I haven't seen the film, so I'm amazed that there's so much music. Could be really good.

Im sure the folks at Intrada atleast tried to get that rejected score out as a 2nd cd at some point. But probably the folks at Disney weren't up to it. I'm sure Intrada board will figure out the details sooner or later.Let see. Im curious here..

It's also entirely possible that good friend to Intrada Bruce Broughton would prefer his music be presented on its own, and not in a format that inevitably invited comparison with another composer's work. Quite possible that almost-as-good friend to Intrada David Shire might feel the same way.

Doesn't mean a separate release couldn't happen at some point.

I prefer rejected scores to be released separately anyway, so while I'd be interested to hear Shire's score, I'm quite happy with the way this is being released.

This came out the same year as Tombstone, I'll actually take that one-two punch over JW's fantastic Jurassic/Schindler combo that same year.

This is a near Holy Grail release for me. The original album emphasizes the more rousing renditions of the main theme, and leaves off a lot of great dramatic material; the full score should be a more balanced listening experience. And there are some great unreleased renditions of the main theme, too. (Sassy In The River, Reunion)

Who doesn't like Shadow's Theme? If you don't like it, you have no soul and should leave this thread.

This release makes you remember the days when Broughton was still actively scoring and there was something to look forward to every half a year. I miss those days.

It's going to take more than that to stop us.

Ordered this one. I was on the fence after samples last night but then found myself humming the main theme this morning. After another listen of the samples I was hooked. I love how Intrada gets Broughton scores sounding so fresh.

Has anyone got hold of this yet? Very keen to hear how the new music adds to the listening experience of the album. I have and thoroughly enjoy the original release, just trying to decide on whether or not to upgrade.

I just ordered it myself, but I'm familiar with the whole score from watching the film way too many times to hear the unreleased music; if you like the original album there's no reason you won't absolutely love this new release. There's a lot more variety in the presentation of that great main theme than the album showed. This is not a score that will drag at full length.

And just listen to that sample of "Sassy In The River"! I've been waiting for that rendition of Shadow's theme heard at the end of the sample for 20+ years now!

Since Bruce Broughton writes highly varied scores and constantly varies his themes (as Goldsmith did), I find his expanded presentations essential, even though many of his short albums are excellent suites (this one, Young Sherlock Holmes).

I knew the album before my daughter came along, and I was disappointed after watching the film with her as a tyke that the music on the album left off so much. As the music really is a journey, I think the full version is necessary to get the full feel of the music, which plays such a major role in the film.

(Even though some of it is mickey-mousey, not my favorite kind of film music to listen to away from the movie. - But Broughton's mickey-mousing is usually so musically sound - vs. simply meeting the requirements of the visuals - that I can listen to it more than most.)

PLUS: What with this summer being the season of Mission Impossible - with the release of LLL's TV music collection and the fifth movie out with a pleasing score - this expanded edition is a must. Bruce does a terrific take on the iconic theme which makes me long for a Mission Impossible score from this film and tv master.

I'm not very familiar with the album but I think this new release generally works well, though I did remove two tracks from my playlist that stick out and don't really fit with the rest of the album. Specifically I removed Track 11 and Track 18. So much of the music is positive that those two downer tracks interrupt the experience and had to go.

Just want to say how much I'm enjoying this new release. Was really on the fence about getting the expansion as I thought the original album was enough for me but I actually think this presentation works better. The themes are stunningly good, the orchestration astounding and the sound quality brilliant. Highly recommended to anyone who was on the fence like me!
