My favourites from the 80s are THE PROFESSIONAL, ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA, RED SONJA, THE MISSION (the greatest masterpiece from the decade, of course), THE UNTOUCHABLES, CINEMA PARADISO. And from the 90s, I like CITY OF JOY, LEGEND OF 1900 and the rejected WHAT DREAMS MAY COME (IMO, the greatest from the decade).

But all of these are famous titles that you're probably aware of, and so not what you're looking for. My knowledge of less known Morricone titles is severely limited, unfortunately. You'll get better suggestions from Morricone (the FSM member), Tall Guy, plindboe (is he still around?) and others.

To the above titles, I can add

80s

La Banchiera
Le Marginal
Le Ruffian
The Secret Of The Sahara (TV)
Casualties Of War
Gioco Senza Fine (The Endless Game)

90s

Dimenticare Palermo
Il Principe Del Deserto (TV)
La Lupa
Nostromo (TV) (my favorite 90s Morricone, and one of my favorites throughout his discography altogether)

Morricone was so prolific in these decades, it's you may well get swamped with recommendations. I'd say any collaboration with Tornatore or De Palma is top-drawer Morricone.

Also from this time period and worth checking out:

NOSTROMO (Epic score, many themes, classic vocals by frequent collaborator Edda Dell'Orso)
LOLITA (Hauntingly beautiful like a fading summer evening, among my favorite scores by Morricone.)
WOLF (Lingering menace.)
THE THING (Desolate... not for everyone, but I love this as pure music.)

'Bugsy' is one of my favourites from this period. Just sublime.

Did Morricone ever do anything after, say, 1975 that had that melancholy piano-and-trumpet Bacharach sound that defined so many of his great early 70s soundtracks?

From the ones I own I recommend Casualties of War, The Untouchables, Wolf and The Stendhal Syndrome. All great movies in part thanks to their scores.

Yeah, big man is rather off the radar but good, fairly low-key but effective score.

Heh - cheeky!

This forum doesn't need me to point out great Morricones from the 80s and 90s, but I will add a title that I think has been overlooked so far - 1980's Blue Eyed Bandit. A Brubeckian jazzy score unique (as far as I know) in Ennio's CV. The trailer is easily found on YouTube and includes both great music and risible dialogue.

I've always thought Morricone was heavily influenced by Bacharach's use of the flugelhorn and certain piano chords.......although he never mentions him ?

Here's an example....

Ennio Morricone and Burt Bacharach.....separated at birth ?

I started a thread on this very topic a while back:

If you take a mid-tempo Bacharach tune and play it on piano at a slower tempo, it will sound a lot like early-70s Morricone.

Thank you for the info.
I've just been listening to "Seconda Borghesia" from "Piazza Di Spagna" (1993) which is another example.....but unfortunately unavailable on youtube.
