Haven't seen it mentioned but I'm also really partial to Ennio's terrific score to HAMLET (the Mel Gibson version) from the 1990 film. I don't know how much respect the film or score get in the conventional wisdom, but I think the soundtrack is just great, especially the Main Title and the music for Ophelia.

You're not on your own, nerf - three top class themes (including Ophelia's), some atmospheric ghost music and catchy period dance pieces make this something of a favourite of mine.

Some great suggestions here. Just sticking to those scores that are easily (relatively) obtainable the following are some of my favourites from the period, discounting those you mentioned and a few famous ones that you will be (I assume) familiar with. I regret that 2 of my favourite scores from the period LA VENEXIANA and LES VOLEURS DE LA NUIT are not easily obtainable at the moment:

ITALIAN MOVIES

LA DAME AUX CAMELIAS (1980) - Beautfully atmospheric score for piano and orchestra, get the expanded Cinevox CD.

TRAGEDY OF A RIDICULOUS MAN (1981) - A very low key but charming score to this Bertolucci movie.

IL BANDITO DAGLI OCCHI AZZURRI (1982) - A strong jazz based score but with a lovely orchestral theme and a Vivaldi style theme.

MOSCA ADDIO (1985) - A haunting score, get the expanded Saimel issue while you can. Beautifully atmospheric.

IL PENTITO (1985) - A mostly symphonic gangster movie score, great main theme (originally written for ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA).

STANNO TUTTI BENE (1989) - Woefully underrated Tonatore movie and a lovely score by Ennio with a classical style main theme and other haunting themes including one for accordian, very touching.

TEMPO DI UCCIDERE (1989) - Get the GDM cd, a superbly atmospheric score. A forgotten movie that starred Nicolas Cage.

L'UOMO DELLE STELLE (1995) - Another poignant score to a Tonatore film.

I MAGI RANDAGI (1996) - Delightfully catchy medieval score.

LEGGENDA DEL PIANISTA SULL'OCEANO (LEGEND OF 1900) (1998) - Get the Italian edition which is expanded.

INTERNATIONAL PRODUCTIONS

WHITE DOG (1981) - One of the most effective and well used scores Ennio composed for the Amercan cinema, from a listening perspective I believe it works better in the film than as pure music but it is still a powerful experience independently. Get the FSM cd.

LE MARGINAL (1983) - I prefer this to LE PROFESSIONEL. Get the Music Box CD.

RED SONJA (1985) - a rare fantasy film outing for EM with symphonic orchestra and chorus.

FRANTIC (1988) - Try to get the FSM cd.

CASUALTIES OF WAR (1989) - Very moving and emotional score and my favourite to a De Palma movie.

BUGSY (1990).

IN THE LINE OF FIRE (1993) - A big pounding orchestral score, but the romantic theme is not amongst my favourites!

U TURN (1997) - Quirky score for which full appreciation might only come after seeing the movie.

LOLITA (1997) - regrettably the expanded Music Box release is not available easily.

TV MOVIES/SERIES

MARCO POLO (1982) - A large number of themes for symphonic orchestra, chorus and voice, but generally a quiet expressive score. Get the double cd on RAI Trade.

LE PIOVRA (1984 - 1999) - A mixed bag bag but a great representation of Morricone's thriller style with some sublime string writing and wordless vocals, alot of action themes! Get the RAI Trade double CD.

SECRET OF THE SAHARA (1988) - Try to get the expanded GDM release, wonderful atmosphere for this desert adventure.

IL PRINCIPE DEL DESERTO (1989) - another wonderful score for an adventure set in the desert, rich and romantic!

NOSTROMO (1996) - Rich and varied score for a epic tv production.

LA CASE BRUSCIATA (1998) - A film set in the jungle like THE MISSION (which I've not mentioned as assume you have it) and the score has similarities.

These should keep you going!

A Pure formality is truly a great score
Its right up there with those early 70's crime horror classics

I have more albums by Morricone than any other artist. (Duke Ellington must be a close second.)

I don't think I have any Morricone from the 80s or 90s. I jump from "Exorcist II: The Heretic" to "Hateful 8."
