My review of HACKSAW RIDGE by Rupert Gregson-Williams (not Debney) for anyone who's interested...

Don't regret Debney. The score is surprisingly powerful and sounds like a mix between Kingdom of Heaven, JNH and Zimmer's style in the 90s, with many orchestral flourishes. So much better than TARZAN !
And the film is an old school and gore masterpiece.

Agreed. Just finished the film and wow. That theme! Works wonderfully and elevates the picture.

Yes, I had heard that Gibson wanted both cinematographer Andrew Lesnie and James Horner for the picture but unfortunately they both passed away. Gibson honors them both in the Final End Titles/Credits of the film. I can just imagine a wonderful, passionate and emotional James Horner score.

Here's the thread with the correct composer name in the title...

The repeating strings kind of any me, but otherwise I like it. I certainly want to hear more.

Wow, excellent track. However, I do like Rupert Gregson-Williams score, also

I wish more composers would do something like this. Now we need to know where in the film that goes and have our resident member who re-instates tossed scores, do his wizardry.

I love Rupert Gregson-Williams work on this movie!

The new Debney track wasn't my cup of tea...too "heroic", and a little bit cheesy razz

Yeah the cue's definitely good itself, but it seems to get the spirit of the movie totally wrong. I can easily imagine Gibson freaking out...

I kind of doubt that. Unless he got free reign and just did what ever he wanted. a composer typically meets with the director, spots it, gets the thoughts on what this and that should be (what is trying to be conveyed), often demos, most often temp tracks, etc.

I think it's more likely he got what he wanted, but the studio wasn't worried about the film and so Mel did what they wanted (his career was still rebounding back in 2016).

That's my guess.

I'm glad they didn't stick with Debney. It's not bad music, but I think Gregson-Williams nailed it much better. Hacksaw is one of my favourite scores from 2016.

Terrific theme............RGWilliams has never written a single memorable theme or score in his life and would not know where to begin.............
