I don't know why but recently I've had an interest in when composers wrote and recorded scores, and where. Not all albums give recording info so I was hoping you guys might be able to give some input!

Starting from the very beginning of Goldsmith's career would be quite a challenge so can anyone help me piece together a chronology of Goldsmith's career past, say, 1979? Any info is welcome, doesn't have to be in particular order. From what I know:

Alien: February '79, Anvil Studios
Star Trek TMP - October-December '79
Players -???
The Great Train Robbery - April '79

And so on

Anvil
  • High Velocity (recorded in 1974)
  • The Omen
  • Alien

If you have the time and willingness, you can click on each title on his IMDb resume and scroll down to the Other Companies section at the end blow Production Companies, and look for the recording studio if added to IMDb.

For ages I thought THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY was recorded in Spring 1979, as the liner notes in Intrada's release of ALIEN say that Goldsmith stayed in England after recording ALIEN to record THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY. However, this is incorrect as THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY was first released (as THE FIRST GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY) in the West End of London in December 1978. I believe the liner notes for Intrada's release of that score do say 1978 but aren't more specific.

I created an Excel spreadsheet in 2011 to capture information such as this from all the Goldsmith albums that I own.
It is in no way complete - far from it! - but it certainly has more years than 1979. smile

My interest in the dates of recording sessions has been around for much longer than 2011, though - and for hundreds of composers, too, not just for Goldsmith.
I've been curious about a Goldsmith chronology since Varese Sarabande issued volume 2 of LIONHEART on LP in 1987.

I don't have the data with me as of this post, but here's some input on 1964 Goldsmith (which was deposited in this FSM thread on RIO CONCHOS):

    http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?forumID=1&pageID=20&threadID=106145&archive=0

"Gleaning such info from CD notes can be rather hit-or-miss, but here's my reconstruction (thus far) of Goldsmith data for 1964:

•SEVEN DAYS IN MAY: recorded on October 21, 1963; film released February 12, 1964
    •SHOCK TREATMENT: recorded December 10 & 17, 1963; released July 22,1964
•"The Vulcan Affair" episode of THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.: recorded January 7, 1964; broadcast September 22, 1964
    •FATE IS THE HUNTER: recorded March 4 & June 8, 1964; released October 16, 1964
    •THE SATAN BUG: recorded May 26 & 27, 1964; released March 26, 1965
    •RIO CONCHOS: recorded July 23 & 24, 1964 (thanks to RoryR); released October 28, 1964
•"The King Of Knaves Affair" from MFU: recorded August 12, 1964; broadcast December 22, 1964
•"The Deadly Games Affair" from MFU: recorded September 8, 1964; broadcast October 20, 1964
    •IN HARM'S WAY: recorded December 16 & 17 & 18, 1964 (plus 1/25/65); released April 6, 1965"

    Alien: February '79, Anvil Studios
    Star Trek TMP - October-December '79
    Players -???
The Great Train Robbery - ???

My attempt at a 1979 chronology includes some guesswork, but the info on PLAYERS is definitely available:

  • The Great Train Robbery 1978?
  • Alien February 20th, 1979 through March 1st, 1979
  • Players April 18, 1979 through May 25, 1979
  • travelling to Israel for preliminary work on the TV-miniseries Masada
  • Caboblanco Sept '79?
  • Star Trek: The Motion Picture September 25, 1979 through November 29, 1979

If Goldsmith remained in England after Alien, then perhaps it was to prepare an LP album for United Artists (which was released in 1979) from the sessions material he recorded earlier (it had to have been sometime in late '78)?
By April, Goldsmith was back in the states to work on Players.

What little understanding I have on Goldsmith's trip to Israel was that the initial intention was to have his eventual music for Masada performed by an Israeli orchestra. This did not work out as intended and Goldsmith worked much more on Masada during April of 1980. [the series was not shown until April of 1981 - a year later!]

My speculation about Caboblanco being recorded simultaneous with - or prior to - Star Trek is based upon the release of Caboblanco in January of 1980 (one month after Star Trek).
As we all probably know, Goldsmith worked on ST up through the last week of November and a mere week before its premiere. Because of this, Goldsmith's music for Caboblanco was likely already in the can and in post-production either just prior to - or during - Goldsmith's sessions for ST.
[Who knows, though? Maybe Goldsmith stayed in the U.K. in March of '79 to record Caboblanco right after Alien?]

    Night Crossing - June '81
    Poltergiest - Jan/Feb. '82

bump! Anyone else wanna chime in?

The Prometheus CD of "The Challenge" lists November 1981 as the time of the recording sessions, so this means "The Challenge" was the assignment Goldsmith worked on prior to commencing writing for "Poltergeist".

My listing of my Goldsmith chronology is forthcoming.
Since the FSM threads do not display fields of data with spaces or tabs for easier reading, I re-typed the data from my Excel spreadsheet into a list by year in Word (so I can simply copy-n-paste the Word contents into this thread).

[I was not aware that "Night Crossing" was done in June of '81 because I own the earlier disc on this title and not the most recent edition. I'll edit my post with this, thanks.]

Other FSM members, please feel free to fill in the gaps.

If you own an album that's not listed above, look inside the liner notes (or the reverse side of the disc) to see if there exists data on the recording dates.
(I haven't been buying a lot of the Goldsmith expansions over the past 3 years, so if you got "The River Wild" or "The Ghost And The Darkness" or "Gremlins 2" let us know these session dates if the data is available).

Awesome contributions everyone! I wonder if we can also add any album recording dates. I've always wanted to know how long of a gap there is between original score and any re-recording.

    From what I know:

    Explorers - June 1985
    King Solomon's Mines - Late 1985
    Lionheart - September-October 1986
Islands in the Stream (rerecording) - October '86
    Leviathan - January 1989
    The Shadow - May-June 1994
    The River Wild -August-September 1994
    Congo - May 1995
The Ghost and the Darkness - June 1996
    Deep Rising - August 1997
    Small Soldiers - June 1998
The Last Castle - September 2001
Looney Tunes: Back in Action - September-October 2003

Just checked my two CD editions of BANDOLERO! and to my surprise, neither give the recording dates, though I know it had to be the spring of '68, probably a month or two after THE DETECTIVE.

I think original recording dates should be in the booklets with all movie score CDs.

I remember Goldsmith saying that ALIEN was the perhaps the worst experience of his career because he was looking at "truck drivers in space" all day along and there was a garbage strike in London at the time.
