Sublime score. I'm looking forward to receiving this one.

Saw the preview for "Carol" at a showing of "Spotlight" and wondered if it has a possible Oscar multiple nominations look to it and a music nomination for Carter Burwell. Looks like he may be on a happy roll right now?

The Oscar music nominations may be especially interesting this year for a number of reasons.

Hopefully Carter Burwell will snag a nomination this go round.

An Oscar nomination is long overdue for Burwell. Hope he'll receive one for this, it would be very deserved.

Saw the film today, stunning, powerful, Haynes's best so far. It's like one review said, FAR FROM HEAVEN, without the ironic distancing and stylization, extremely raw and realistic.

Burwell's score is gorgeous, I definitely caught the Glass nods, but they work well, and the score is distinctively and unmistakably Burwell's, definitely feels like a stylistic continuation of MILDRED PIERCE, which is a wonderful thing.

Dang, finally listened to this and the tracks Opening, Christmas Trees
Drive into the Night (this one in particular!), To Court, The Times ,The End are more than just imitation Glass, they are plagiarisms. Shame on Burwell. And an Oscar nomination...I wonder if he will thank Glass.

Well stated. Explains very much my reaction to the score as well. A bit too minimalist for me.

I've never been a fan of Burwell, enjoying only one score of his and that from Fargo. However, I will say that CAROL is actually very lovely and worthy of the Oscar nomination. Both the film and music are lovely.

'Carol', both film and score totally underwhelmed me, 'Oscar' nods not withstanding.

I agree with every word above. Also spot on is Peter Greenhill's remark "One sequence, where the score merges with the source music during a car driving sequence is just gorgeous." A shining bit of audio art, something many have attempted and failed at.

Jonathan Broxton's review of the score includes this quote from Burwell:

In an interview with Rolling Stone earlier this year, Burwell was "emphatic that his scores aren’t responsible for all of the emotional heavy-lifting," and said that, "as a listener, I do not like being instructed. It riles me when the music tells me something before I can figure it out for myself. In fact, I enjoy the discomfort of not being sure how to take something."

One wonders what purpose Burwell thinks that a score is supposed to serve in a film, if not to guide the viewer on the film's emotional journey.

I had no idea until today that Varese released a download-only remix of the main theme. Very cool:

That's certainly better than your a-ve-rage film score remix. Perfect for the post-credits scene in which Sam Jackson recruits Carol to join the Avengers.

Ha! An AVENGERS made up entirely of Highsmith characters - Blanchett as Carol, Damon as Ripley, get in the psycho killer from Strangers on a Train too... I'm in to watch THAT. smile
