Expanded release of richly melodic, highly exciting Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack for popular Don Bluth animation film from Robert C. O'Brien novel "Mrs. Frisby And The Rats Of NIMH", with voices of Elizabeth Hartman, Dom DeLuise, Derek Jacobi, Hermione Baddeley, Peter Strauss, John Carradine. Original 1982 album offered generous 48-minute program featuring all of the major cues save one lengthy dramatic sequence entitled "At Your Service" and a few shorter bits. For some three decades, complete session elements have been lost and sadly remain as such. But exhaustive search did yield significant reward: Len Engel's actual first generation 1982 dbx-encoded album master plus 3 rolls of 1" and 1/2" multi-track tape offered complete album - and at last! - the previously unreleased "At Your Service". Three additional demo theme recordings featuring both Paul Williams and Sally Stevens were also present on masters. Jerry Goldsmith fashioned his music in epic-scale for large orchestra plus chorus with nods to classic styles of Debussy, Stravinsky as well as his own landmark Poltergeist. Resulting score offers magical moments, beautiful theme, awe-inspiring colors plus incredibly ferocious action music. Another big asset: several sequences are quite lengthy. Total score now runs 53 minutes. Ten additional minutes of demos bring CD up to 63 minutes. Courtesy MGM, Intrada re-mastered CD now offers nearly-complete program in dynamic stereo. Informative liner notes from Jeff Bond plus flipper-style cover artwork and interior package design by Joe Sikoryak add rich graphics to compliment Goldsmith's legendary score. Recorded May 4-7, 1982 at CTS Studios in London. Jerry Goldsmith conducts National Philharmonic Orchestra, Ambrosian Singers. Intrada Special Collection CD release available while quantities and interest remain!

Wait a second...

There is a 2.3 second triangle "ding" that I recall very, very prominently from the film. It is my most wanted unreleased cue ever, and like all unreleased Goldsmith cues, it is a work of vaulting genius and musical craftsmanship of an unparalleled level.

I'm very, very disturbed that this cue does NOT appear to have been included in this expanded program and I sincerely hope Intrada will take IMMEDIATE action to remedy this, lest I be forced to take legal action (via Goldsmith and Associates LLC) against their company for failing to include this utterly quintessential piece of Goldsmithian genius.

The very thought of them INTENTIONALLY tarnishing the legacy of Jerry by omitting this set piece is, in so many words, utter bedlam.

I expect this transgression to be remedied via a complete reprinting of EVERY CD within the next 24 hours.

Now let me get back to the Jerr-Bear Shrine in my closet, as I just picked up a Bloomin' Onion from Outback as a sacrifice to Our Lord and Savior Jerald.

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but all this re-release adds is one score cue, and three demo tracks.

Sorry, but, much as I like the score, I want more for my bucks. Good luck to everyone else, though.

It's remastered. Others have pointed out before the sound of hte old release. Plus there's at least one drop out in the previous releases (othrers have suggested two or three), so if those are also fixed, there's also that. Given today's technology for remasteres, this is a clear upgrade, even if one more score cue.

You are explicitly correct, as the Intrada blurb states. The rest of the score was not to be found.

Wow...that "side B" cover art is GORGEOUS...and it's key art for the film I have honestly never seen before. eek

Anyways, I plan to pick this up, despite the sting of the missing music...at least the one rescued cue is among the best of the unreleased portions, and the remastered sound will be a sight for sore ears (the TER disc sounded quite poor).

Heard the news, Mrs. Brisby...?

Anyways, sad as it is that most of the unreleased stuff is lost, I'm very happy at what Intrada has managed to save. smile

I've played the Varèse endlessly, and it's unfortunate the complete score hasn't been located, but that one extra cue is phenomenal, as is Joe Sikoryak's design! Bravo Intrada! This will be well worth the upgrade.

Just noticed that the Paul Williams "Flying Dreams" vocal has essentially been plopped right down in the middle of the album sequence. That's very odd. Maybe it's because if it were at the end, it'd be too repetitive with the Williams demo recording?

Finally will be able to add this great score to my Goldsmith discography. Thanks Intrada. Can anyone illustrate how much music is actually missing? Just curious.

I'm curious about that art too. I remember seeing it years ago online. I thought it was fan art.

About 9 minutes.

The "side B" cover art is actually some artwork done by one Adam McDaniel (who appears to be a big fan of the film). You can see some of his artwork here:

I must admit that it's a shame about the missing cues, but I'm glad they were able to find some extra material and the sound clips sound fabulous. My one quibble concerns the "Original MGM Motion Picture Soundtrack" label when it was actually a United Artists film.

Thanks for the info on the "B" cover art.

Also the soundtrack needs this! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuaJm8_0cZ0

Thanks for the link...lots of very nice cinema-inspired art there. I would honestly love to have a poster-sized replica of his NIMH piece...it stands up to the theatrical poster for the film.

Actually, looking at the album sequence, it's totally out of film order. Even if a C&C presentation were impossible due to the missing cues and crossfading, it should have been easy to get an approximate film order to the cues. Kind of disappointing.

I understand that Intrada tried to find everything and everywhere, thanks for their hard work.
But it's really shame that even stem masters not survive (as movie is in dolby, I suppose music stem masters could be in stereo), 'cause if they survived, I bet that Intrada (of course!) used it for the last unreleased tracks!
So, as always - for something I love you, MGM! For something I HATE you )))
