I recall some assorted threads that mentioned scores and/or music by Kitaro -- but I could not find anything of a recent vintage. I used to have a volume of "Silk Road" on CD -- but it appears to have been lost in the miasma of my shelving systems. I really liked "Silk Road" -- some of the contours of the music reminded me of the route that Mark Knopfler took with "Local Hero" and "Cal".

What are some CDs that others would recommend? Thanks!.

My two favorites have always been Heaven & Earth and The Soong Sisters. Both are more orchestral than his Silk Road scores, possibly thanks to the fact that Randy Miller collaborated on both scores.

I also like Ancient, which is the soundtrack to another of his NHK documentary scores like the Silk Road was. It's available to stream on Amazon Prime if you're a member, as are a few other Kitaro albums.

What a coincidence, I just bought a used Kitaro CD yesterday (Towards The West), and I thought about doing a thread about him.

I also have Silk Road IV on CD.

I admire the fact that Oliver Stone hired him for Heaven & Earth, and also that Stone went for Vangelis on Alexander.

Millenia is highly recommended, but is out of print and seems to only be available at high prices. Astral Voyage also is one of my favorites.

Astral Voyage, Oasis, Ki and In Digital are Kitaro's best albums. The '70s and very early '80s stuff is best.

More good albums worth hearing/having: Full Moon Story, Towards the West, Silver Cloud.

Once Kitaro released Tenku, I was done. He was no longer innovating.

Another vote here for Millennia. It was a score originally done for an anime film, Queen Millennia

Actually not outrageously expensive on Amazon.

Now playing Silk Road. Quite enjoyable, some JM Jarre-elements.
