It's being reported that Wes Craven has passed by Variety and The Hollywood Reporter etc. 76. SO so sad. So many great scores came from this master of the cinema, especially the Nightmare films and the Scream franchise.

Craven, Peter.

The passing of a legend.

Agreed, so sad. I enjoyed reading and listening to his thoughts on his experiences as a filmmaker as much as watching his films.

Favorite score to one of his films? I think mine may be SWAMP THING or A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 1.

It's nice to see that you can't even wait until the body is cold to start this sort of nonsense.

I assume he meant that "nonsense" as a form of tribute or appreciation for the work of the deceased.

Oooh... that's a bit harsh, Ford. There are lots of ways to express respect, you know?

No, it's not too harsh.

This was after all a human being who just died and perhaps just giving it a day before starting 'What was my favorite Movie" Lists might be in order.

Ford, well, when a stranger dies and the only thing you really know about them is their work, and if you're a score fan, then it kinda makes sense to offer an expression via something you know and like... such as a score.

Maybe anything else is actually a meaningless platitude.

Too be honest my low opinion with this board sometimes over these sorts of things just knows no depths after seeing these sorts of threads and the logic used to justify them.

Do what you wish.

and many many more.

The man gave me so many nightmares as I grew up on the 80's and only met him once VERY briefly, nice guy great sense of humor. We all mourn in our own ways and us being film score fans, we look to the music as that is what we associate him with, he allowed these composers to give us some great music like Heath mentioned. I've often gone to music when someone passes away, I'll put on a favorite track from one of their films. That is how I mourn and how I cope sometimes. I don't think there is anything wrong with that. You mourn in your way, I'll mourn in my way and I will not tell you how you should mourn.

Only on FSM can an announcement of passing thread turn into a fight in just a few hours.

Relating to the news, I will now be going through Craven's catalogue and as many scores as I have of those films.

Craven certainly made the horror genre more accessible for me. Was never a big fan until the Scream films came along. Not only are they near and dear to me, and Marco's scores are pretty great too, but they inspired me to get into the more traditional slasher films, to some mixed results admittedly. He was a pretty crafty and talented guy.

And don't anyone fret for a second about creating or partaking in this thread. There isn't a person on this planet who should be taking etiquette lessons from Ford.

As I've written on the other side of the board, Nightmare on Elm Street was the first horror movie I ever saw and thus also the first horror score I got to hear and I loved that eerie theme Bernstein composed. It has the best opening sequence for any horror movie and much of that is thanks to Charles Bernstein.

Bernstein and Craven:

R.I.P.

For all his undoubted skills at raising gooseflesh, the work of Mr. Craven which will always mean the most to me is "Her Pilgrim Soul," a tender science fiction love story beautifully written by Alan Brennert for the NEW TWILIGHT ZONE series.

Peter, I'd be interested to know the circumstances of your encounter with the man, or any details you care to share. A number of years ago, I went to the Sunset Multiplex to see the documentary about Robert Evans, THE KID STAYS IN THE PICTURE. At one point, Evans told about having a heart attack while he was visiting Wes Craven's home to discuss business, and the paramedics arriving to put him on a stretcher. A little while later, when the film finished and the lights came up again in that intimate little theater, I was pleasantly surprised to discover Craven himself sitting a few rows in back of me. I mean, what are the odds? Walking out, I introduced myself and thanked him for "Her Pilgrim Soul." And then, I said, "I have to ask you, was Evans' story true about having his heart attack at your house and the paramedics whisking him away?" "Oh, yes," said Mr. Craven, "and he kept right on talking the whole time they wheeled him out of there."

Shocked to hear this, as I didn't even know he was sick.

Craven was a rare breed who was more than "just" a film director. He also had a fairly strong academic background, and made use of his forrays into psychology and philosophy when he did those 'smart' horror films. SCREAM, of course, defined a whole genre of film that is still with us till this day. It's not for nothing that it's hailed as one of the cornerstones of postmodern cinema.

And of course, films like THE HILLS HAVE EYES and THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT are almost infused with arthouse aesthetics -- true 'horror grit'.

He will be sorely missed.

Sad news.
I wasn't a big fan of his Scream and beyond stuff, but his earlier efforts were cool.
Favourite score?
Why, the work of another sad recent passing...Deadly Blessing by James Horner.
RIP Wes Craven.
