Sean, that makes sense, and I see where you're coming from. But I've read worse on other threads, including actual --- joking, of course --- death threats that never lead to the threads/topics being locked. My only question is: Why the inconsistency?
I suspect because this particular case is a longstanding one, and the most long-term issue I think over the years and on many different threads. But I agree - I tend to wish that all such posts would be a bit more moderate - don't write something you might wish you hadn't in the months or years to come. (I say this from, er, personal experience, though I don't think I've ever engaged in ad hominem attacks.)
