The list of music from his films is like the soundtrack to my life.
Risky Business (1981) to Mission Impossible (1995) to Collateral (2004) to Oblivion (2012). Guy's been a Constant. Kind of unreal.

Risky Business will probably always standout. It was the first soundtrack I wanted. It was also hard to find import only CD at the time. Also my introduction to Tangerine Dream.

Didn't Silva or Varese or someone do a compilation of Tom Cruise soundtracks back when they did those actor-centric albums?

While it is completely random (the actor really has no bearing on the music), the music for Tom Cruise movies is pretty astounding: RISKY BUSINESS (Tangerine Dream), LEGEND (Goldsmith), TOP GUN (Faltermeyer), RAIN MAN (Zimmer), BORN ON THE 4TH OF JULY (Williams), DAYS OF THUNDER (Zimmer), FAR & AWAY (Williams), THE FIRM (Grusin), INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE (Goldenthal), MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE (Elfman) and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2 (Zimmer), MINORITY REPORT (Williams), THE LAST SAMURAI (Zimmer), WAR OF THE WORLDS (Williams), OBLIVION (M83) etc.

All of those mentioned are solid gold (lots of Zimmer & Williams)!

I didn't even know he'd died.

Let's say Minority Report - specifically Anderton's Great Escape.

Silva did those 'Hollywood Stars' CDs Thor. The only one I have is Kevin Costner. 'Far And Away' is my favourite here, love that score.

Apparently he went hanging onto the side of a plane and his face blew off.

I'll second Minority Report but my favorite has to be Interview with the Vampire (Goldenthal), the one where Oprah got distraught.

Yes, brilliant scores for many TC movies:

Oblivion - M83
Collateral - James Newton Howard
The Last Samurai - Hans Zimmer
Mission: Impossible II - Hans Zimmer
Days Of Thunder - Hans Zimmer
Rain Man - Hans Zimmer
Top Gun - Harold Faltermeyer
Legend - Tangerine Dream
Risky Business - Tangerine Dream

Came to think of it, Tom probably speaks german in his sleep.

Certainly the Mission: Impossible scores (...most of them; I've never seen 2) and Interview with the Vampire, but I'd also like to throw some appreciation toward John Powell's KNIGHT AND DAY.

I happen to be very fond of "War of the Worlds" (the Williams score, obviously). I don't think it has a lot of fans, but I'm one.

I think that everything about that movie is underrated. I should put that on now.

Agreed. Wonderful film and score! And the much-hated basement scene is the BEST part of it, IMO.

I believe War of the Worlds was the moment in time where Cruise Fatigue kicked in (Oprah Couch Jumping, Scientology etc etc).
