I wonder, if the lack of the last note of gong ending “Intermezzo” was a mistake of a reconstruction (Leigh Phillips may have missed it?), or some musician missed the note?

This is very good, interresting question. Did James Fitzpatrick visited this message board? Or Leigh Phillips? It will be great to have an answer from one of them.

James commented previously. Go back to Oct 27 posts!

Regardless of any error in the "intermezzo" this recording is a magnificent achievement and highly recommended to any who are on the fence about a purchase.

Contrary to what some members think, I ran “Sodom and Gomorrah” when it was a new release in 1963 during my time as a cinema projectionist and I thought it was a great epic with a superb score. The battle by the dam sequence lasted for almost a whole reel and was very well done, choreographed and edited with the breaking of the dam by the Hebrews and millions of tons of water pouring out over the valley to drown the Elamite (or Helamite) cavalry one of the most spectacular sequences ever put on film. The film should have done better at the Box Office here in the UK (it was certainly heavily promoted), but the fact that it was passed with an 'X' certificate by the then British Board of Film Censors meant it lost the family audience as no one under 16 years was allowed into a cinema to see it.

If it had its faults, it was probably down to it being heavily cut by the censors, and I wondered at the time why God destroyed the twin cities. It can't have been because of all the cavorting and sex, because we saw none of it and this made it look like he destroyed the cities solely because the inhabitants were very fond of a cup of wine and a bit of erotic dancing. As for the two CD set of re-recordings, well, as excellent as it is, you can't really improve on the original as it was perfect, but it does include the complete opening titles music, the last four minutes or so of which is missing in the vaults and only exists now on prints of the film or on the videos and DVDs of it.

Lastly, I have read the account of Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis, which is so short that if made directly into a film, would only last for five minutes, and nowhere in it does it say what the inhabitants of the twin cities got up to with each other, either sexually or any other way. So how homosexuality came to be called Sodomy and homosexuals came to be called Sodomites is a mystery to me.

Wikipedia offers some theories as to how the connection came about.

As much as I do like the original recording since Rozsa himself conducted, the sound quality leaves a lot to be desired, at least on the 2 CD release(s) from Digitmovies. I have heard that they applied some bad processing, and that it's likely that the 2 LP set sounds much better...but sadly I've never heard the LPs and don't know how much better it can sound. Also, the 2 LP set did not include the complete score (just a much larger portion than any prior release). The Tadlow recording is superbly done, in the best sound, and with the most music. So I would say it is a substantial improvement, myself. I am forever grateful to Tadlow and Prometheus for that set.

Too bad they never got around to the sequel (Genesis 19:30-38). That would really have raised some eyebrows.

The Tadlow recording is a revelation. I love the score. Have this and the Italian 2cd set which has fine performances and nuances that I like such as the songs and source cues. 'The Gate of Sodom' sounds far better on this than it's interpretation on Tadlow perhaps the instrumentation is different.

Yes, Tadlow/Prometheus "Sodom and Gomorrah" is absolutely stunning. I love this score, it is so majestic. This recording is also very important for me because I have privilege to attend "Sodo..." sessions in 2015 in Prague. It was one of the most beautiful few days in my entire life. Prague recording is outstanding - is powerful, full of enthusiasm, reveals so mamy details in orchestration and action music - my God, those battle sound like symphony movement!

I also hope that one day OST have been found and released with remastered, proper sound in complete version.
I have Digitmovies album but sound is awful.

Original Rozsa reading is always precious, im hope one day we will get it. At this time I think that only one label which can do this is Intrada. They found good sources for Sindbad, so maybe they can found for Sodom and Gomorrah?

Im hope so.
