Rousing, flavorful Walt Disney/Ron Goodwin soundtrack music arrives on CD at last! One of several pictures scored by Goodwin for Disney, Candleshoe offers music both comedic, dramatic. Jodie Foster, David Niven, Helen Hayes, Leo McKern headline terrific cast, Norman Tokar directs with flair. Candleshoe is English countryside estate replete with possible ancestral treasure. Hayes is owner Lady St. Edmund, Niven her loyal butler, Foster the American orphan staged by thieves to pose as missing granddaughter in order to locate treasure. Events funny, exciting, warmly sentimental all result. Goodwin tackles all of them with his score. Energetic "Main Title" launches with brass line over striking major key rhythms. Other themes abound throughout score but two outstanding ideas based on harmonic vocabulary of main theme deserve spotlight. First is richly expressive string music in modal Vaughan Williams manner during "Casey Takes A Walk With Lady St. Edmund", opening portion of "End Title". Second is incredibly dynamic sword-fight action music for "The Big Fight At Candleshoe" with blazing brass, powerful rhythms, unfolding to similar modal harmonies. Results are widely varied orchestral scoring with unusual degree of coherency throughout. Entire score appears on Intrada CD, presented from two-track stereo session masters recorded by Goodwin in April 1977 at Anvil Studios with Eric Tomlinson engineering, all courtesy Walt Disney Pictures and Ron Goodwin Estate. Goodwin scores lilting "Candleshoe Waltz" for both vintage phonograph-style chamber ensemble plus full orchestral statement, then melds portions of each as nostalgic scene between Hayes, Niven plays on screen. Film mix plays as track 14, complete separate versions appear later as extras. Also included in extras are two additional alternate takes of "Main Title", two piano quotes of "Greensleeves" that figure prominently in first part of film plus one alternate take of lively "Market Day" sequence. Informative liner notes by Tim Greiving, colorful package design by Joe Sikoryak. Ron Goodwin conducts. Intrada Special Collection CD available while quantities and interest remain!

Always excited about a new Disney score release, but I really had no idea what it sounded like. After hearing the samples this exceeded my exceptions! This may top "Escape to Witch Mountain".

Wonderful to have another Ron Goodwin score.

Still hoping for Monte Carlo Or Bust.

at long last some Goodwin disney!
there will be quite a few happy people out there today.
and a step towards opening a few younger ears as to how good Ron was!

And well done to long-term pal Ron Shillingford and Goodwins wife Heather, who have always been helpful and encouraged Goodwins musical legacy to be preserved, who undoubtedly would have played a part getting this out there.

samples sound terrific. and really clear.

i always thought Ron had done four 70s disney films, but it seems it was 3, Candleshoe, The spaceman and king arthur and One of our dinosaurs is missing. Within a similar genre, he also did Escape from the Dark (Littlest horse thieves).

Now all we have to get DISNEY to release is Goodwin's scores to "One of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing" and "Unidentified Flying Oddball" to INTRADA, I'll be a very happy camper.

Escape from the Dark (aka The Littlest Horse Thieves) was also a Disney film, and it had a UK lp release at the time. It was reissued on CD by Quartet a couple of years ago.

This release is amazing!!! I have waited so many years to own THAT main title theme! One of the best of the seventies. So very british in style - like a seventies Miss Marple Theme (also by Goodwin).

Thank you, Intrada!

He was no slouch with his two TV movie scores for Disney, either. It all deserves to be put out there, but for now, I'm ecstatic to have Candleshoe.

It had been so many years since I saw this film that I had very little memory of the score, but I love Ron Goodwin, so it was an instant purchase.
The CD is even better than I had hoped...classic Goodwin. Just delightful.

Kudos to Intrada for championing Ron Goodwin and releasing his scores. Since the demise of FSM, they seem to be the only ones doing it. From their definitive THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES to the less well known, but amazing, SIR GAWAIN AND THE GREEN KNIGHT, and now CANDLESHOE, they have been happily feeding my Goodwin addiction. Let's hope THOSE DARING YOUNG MEN IN THEIR JAUNTY JALOPIES (aka MONTE CARLO OR BUST) is not far behind.

Too bad for that funky/jazz main titles. Other parts sound like I would enjoy it but that specific 70s sound is something I could never get into. Shame, because I otherwise like the Ron Goodwin sound.

It's a really enjoyable score. Surprisingly good considering this was a weak decade for Disney entertainment.

Out of the three, "Escape to Witch Mountain", "Unidentified Flying Oddball", and "Candleshoe", this is my favorite. (Though their all good.)

Funny, I had the exact opposite reaction. I wish the rest of the score was more like the main titles!

Fun score, don't miss out!

Indeed it is. If I recall, the film wasn't too bad either, for light-hearted live-action 70s Disney.
