Caldera Records is proud to present the original score for the television movie Rebecca from 1997, directed by Jim O'Brien and starring Emilia Fox, Charles Dance, Faye Dunaway and Diana Rigg. The movie is based on the famous novel of the same name by Daphne du Maurier which had already been made into a successful movie by Alfred Hitchcock in 1940. It tells the tragic love story between a rich gentleman and his second wife who not only has to cope with an obsessive and evil housekeeper but also with the shadow of the first wife who obviously died under strange circumstances... Christopher Gunning wrote one of his most beautiful and rich scores for this adaption, capturing every aspect of the story in his music. While there is a dark and melancholic main theme, the romance between the (happy) couple is described in a lush melody for the full orchestra which receives its variations throughout the whole score. The tense moments in the movie are accompanied by aggressive outbursts from the orchestra, often featuring prominent, difficult and expressive solos from the cello. Christopher Gunning himself thinks of Rebecca as one of his very best scores and we are glad that you can finally see for yourself that it is indeed – but even more than that: it is one of the most diverse and inspired scores ever written for television. As a bonus, we included an exclusive audio commentary by the composer where he talks about his work. The eleventh CD-release of Caldera Records features a detailed booklet-text by Gergely Hubai and elegant artwork by Luis Miguel Rojas. The CD was produced by Stephan Eicke and John Elborg.

yes, we all know you dislike SAE, as you remind us every roll eyes time someone refers to the store.
If you live in Prague, why not order a European cd from Musicbox rather than a store in USA?

Perhaps because I prefer not to order 1 CD at a time and need to combine it with bigger order... in that case... waiting for Intrada.

I thought the problem you had with SAE is they delayed your order? I dunno if everything was in-stock when you ordered, but I know including a pre-order for a foreign cd puts the whole thing in limbo (which I've experienced with other online stores). Also seems like the favorable exchange rate is offset by expensive international shipping from USA, so I'd think ordering a European cd in Europe would be acceptable (but I've never done the math).

It wasn't in stock but it would be and was supposed to be 1 week after I placed my order. Due to the fact they haven't actually ordered stock for almost 2 months... it took a bit longer...

Even BSX isn't this bad these days.

Yes... it is actually cheaper to order EU-released scores in EU... but in order to do that you still have to get at least 4 CDs together for a single shipment (in case of Music box or Quartet). Then the CD and shipping costs for a single CD are about 10% cheaper than if you order the same CD from US based store such as Sae or Intrada...

If I remember correctly with current exchange rate one CD costs about 600-620 CZK (roughly 24-25 USD including shipping - since I rarely order less than 4-5 CDs together). When I ordered a copy of Maria from Music box, my copy was for about 550,- CZK if I remember correctly.

But this qualifies only for CDs from labels such as Caldera or Music box's own releases... speaking of Varese or Intrada or LLL CDs it is of course way cheaper to order them from labels directly (or in some cases from Amazon, where some regular releases are for 12 USD for example), rather than spend 17 EUR + shipping on the same CD it would cost to get it from any of the EU-based stores. There is also big difference with limited editions (not counting shipping) - 20 USD standard price compared with 25 or in some cases 30 EUR for which they are being sold by EU stores.

I'm surprised USA cds would cost more in Europe considering the favorable exchange rate. I dunno if VAT plays a part? Here, you only pay for tax if you live in the same state as the online store.
Anyway, looks like you got your wish with Intrada.
One nice thing about ordering a foreign cd thru USA stores is it's usually cheaper for us than ordering direct (the disc price and/or shipping).

Yep, great release. Caldera's knocking it out of the park. As is Dragon's Domain. Yay for small labels!

This is a terrific score. The British certainly know how to create dramatic, melodic, romantic scores, something we don't hear much in the US films these days. Another great score by Gunning is Firelight, highly recommended if it is still available.

Yea, this and Firelight make excellent companions, drawing from a very British form of melodicism.

With regards to the US comment, mind you, this score is 17 years old as of this year. We were still getting quality writing from films in the US during that time period, even if it was around the time where they were beginning to wan or become less frequent.
