It was that End Title from JAWS that first transported me to that Land of Dreams and Longing. Whenever I've heard him do it again, it always gets me. Jonathan Kent's Death in SUPERMAN (also used for baby's farewell on Krypton). Those tolling bells just wreck me. Even Val & Aqua in HEARTBEEPS, one of the worst films I've ever seen, but still, when those chimes toll and they run out of power..it's a killer, at least music-wise. Are there any other times he's done it? What am I forgetting? I need more Williams Bells!!! HELP!!!!!
Various versions of the finale from Goodbye, Mr. Chips (obvious) Starting 0:48 into "Father McKay" from "The Mission" (from Amazing Storires) Ending of "Cadillac of the Skies" from Empire of the Sun Starting 3:27 in "The Big Match" from Far and Away Various occurrences in Home Alone, usually with the "Marley" or "Star of Bethlehem" themes. End of "Vader's Death" from Return of the Jedi
Some of my favorites are: Black Sunday(?) – “Beirut” - uncertain if the sound is from muted bells or chimes CE3K (Collector’s Edition) – “The Visitors/Bye/End Titles" ~8:23 Jaws 2 - “Attack on the Helicopter” Midway – “Main Title” Raiders Of The Lost Ark – “The Warehouse” The Eiger Sanction - “Main Title” The Towering Inferno – “Finale” ~3:37
And as Joe 1956 stated those great cues from LIS. As a child watching these when they were originally broadcast, the bells were what stood out in my mind. Don't recall anyone else using them back in the day.
CE3K (Collector’s Edition) – “The Visitors/Bye/End Titles" ~8:23
Oh yes! The eight million time this has been re-recorded and those bells are only on the original re-recording. I'll take this moment even over seeing the dinosaurs for the first time in Jurassic Park. (It's close.)
When I opened the thread, I was thinking mainly of the sad/reflective/yearning use in my quoted cues, but being reminded of all the other bell effects Jay Dubya has utilised is a grand reflection of how this master of ceremonies has constantly surprised and entertained me over the decades. Long Live The King!
Ah, OK. I was talking about specific time frames within tracks where the bells occur. But now that I know you're talking about tubular bells/chimes, it makes more sense.
Kassim's Death from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Not really tolling, but "The Mondrian Shot" from Family Plot has a very original usage of bells: multiple bells being softly tremoloed while piano and harpsichord play eerie variations on the pain theme. There are multiple bells of varying size each played tremolo. I can't recall any other use of the bells like that - it's really worth a listen.
