Can you think of any movies where the main character's first name is the same as the ACTOR'S first name portraying that character?
The only one I can come up with is Jack Torrence(Played by Jack Nicholson) in The Shining. I know there must be a gazillion more, but I sure as shit can't think of 'em!
I do seem to remember some actor whose character USUALLY HAD his first name, and I always thought it was because that actor might not remember his character's name, so they changed it to accomodate that actor. Any idea on who THAT is/was?

For an actor with a common first name, and a long career, it becomes easy. Take John Wayne. He appeared as the following characters:

John Drury – RIDE HIM COWBOY (1932)
John Steele – THE BIG STAMPEDE (1932)
John Mason – HAUNTED GOLD (1932)
John Trent – THE TELEGRAPH TRAIL (1933)
John Bishop – SOMEWHERE IN SONORA (1933)
Captain John Holmes – THE MAN FROM MONTEREY (1933)
John Brant – SAGEBRUSH TRAIL (1933)
John Carruthers – BLUE STEEL (1934)
John Weston – THE MAN FROM UTAH (1934)
John Travers – THE STAR PACKER (1934)
John Tobin – THE LAWLESS FRONTIER (1934)
John Higgins – TEXAS TERROR (1935)
John Martin – RAINBOW VALLEY (1935)
John Scott (posing as John Jones) – THE DESERT TRAIL (1935)
John Mason [again] – THE DAWN RIDER (1935)
John Wyatt & John Rogers – PARADISE CANYON (1935)
John Wyatt [again] – WESTWARD HO (1935)
John – THE NEW FRONTIER (1935)
John Middleton – LAWLESS RANGE (1935)
Capt. John Delmont – THE OREGON TRAIL (1936)
John Tipton – THE LAWLESS NINETIES (1936)
John Clayborn – KING OF THE PECOS (1936)
Captain John Ashley – THE LONELY TRAIL (1936)
John Blair – WINDS OF THE WASTELAND (1936)

I suspect that Wayne’s character was named “John” in all of those ‘B’ westerns just so the actors wouldn’t have to learn a new character name every other month when they started a new film. Fewer retakes due to blown lines.

But Wayne continued to play “John” characters after he became a star.

Johnny Hanson – IDOL OF THE CROWDS (1937)
John Phillips – THREE FACES WEST (1940)
John Reynolds – LADY FROM LOUISIANA (1941)
John Devlin – DAKOTA (1945)
Johnny – TYCOON (1947)
John Breen – THE FIGHTING KENTUCKIAN (1949)
Sheriff John T. Chance – RIO BRAVO (1959)
John Elder – THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER (1965)
Colonel John Henry Thomas – THE UNDEFEATED (1969)
John Chisum – CHISUM (1970)

It's somewhat of a cheat, but Lon Chaney played a character named "Lon" in a number of silent shorts, including:

THE TRAP (1913)
RED MARGARET, MOONSHINER (1913)
DISCORD AND HARMONY (1914)

and a character with a last name, "Lon Moore," in the short LON OF LONE MOUNTAIN (1915).

But shorts really shouldn't count, such as all of the Laurel and Hardy shorts, where the characters are called "Stan" and "Ollie." The same with television shows that are named after the star, e.g., Lucille Ball as "Lucy Ricardo" in "I Love Lucy."
