I'd have thought John Williams would be sick to the back teeth of writing "Star Wars music" by now.

There, that's my trolling done for today.

If anything, I'd be sick of having to write cutesy themes like Jar Jar's Theme ...

Or having to cover absolutely every second with music, including such riveting moments as Character A walking down a hallway with Character B. This was a much bigger issue in the PT, not surprising given that Williams had a much bigger dramatic load to carry, but my musical wish for Episode 7 is more judicious spotting.

Yes. Worse than having to wallpaper the movie, the music wasn't interesting AT ALL. And yet that music takes up probably 40% of the original soundtrack for The Phantom Menace.

I'd have said that after Jedi.

I hope Abrams uses the less is more approach, to give the music it's impact and power back.
I wonder if he will do some sequences with the 'just music' approach, like his opening sacrifice/birth scene in STAR TREK and the Order 66 sequence from SITH.
It will be great to hear Williams kill us with emotion if it does happen.
Maybe an escape sequence like Gillian's from THE FURY (I'm dreaming now).

I enjoyed reading this article the first time, when it was in No Shit Quarterly.

When I heard about this article I rushed to the newsstand to buy it but accidentally picked up Shit Quarterly instead, which is way different. WOW.

Williams is undoubtably one the most important contributors to the Star Wars saga but I'm not sure I'd agree that his role in the movies was more significant than George Lucas'. Lucas did, after all, create the whole thing - without him, Williams wouldn't have had any images to inspire the music.

I prefer to look at it as a synergistic relationship-various parts working together to produced an enhanced result.

Just imagine what could have happened if the person who did the music for this trailer, had done it for the movie:

That video recently posted showing Han frozen in carbonite with and without music says it all. In other words, the OP is right on!

Yeah once in a while he makes a good point.

Also, I was under the impression Lucas sold the property because he wanted it in capable hands and that he was just done with making any more movies. I'd never heard that Disney was keeping him out.

Yep, John Williams if the heart and soul of Star Wars. After suffering through Man Of Steel, I'd add that Williams is the heart and soul of Superman.

Lucas gets a bum rap I think. But from what little I know about the production, it sounds like Marcia Lucas' editing saved Star Wars (1977) and made it the movie it is. That and Williams' score.

Star Wars had a lot of saving graces, even those who aren't even credited such as Brian De Palma who rewrote/edited the opening crawl. Lucas was lucky to have such a creative team around him when he made Star Wars. John Williams is definitely Mr. Star Wars and I'm convinced the film wouldn't have been as successful without Williams score.

Pity that Superman struggled for forty years without a heart or soul.

Has there been an "oral history" recorded with Williams? Hopefully there's one or there will be one that a book can be based on. The section on "Star Wars" would be especially fascinating to me.

Don't forget editors Paul Hirsch and Richard Chew. (Marsha Lucas wasn't brought in until the eleventh hour, when the film started to slip behind schedule.)

Yeah as far as Supeman on the big screen you might be right. Half the reason Superman Returns (2007) disappointed me was the continual referencing of Williams themes. I kept thinking "why didn't he just hire Williams?"

Every screen incarnation of Superman has ( Rightfully so ) had a different musical identity.I love Williams Superman music but i appreciated Man Of Steel to be a completey different take on the character and that extended as far as Hans Zimmers score which i thought was fantastic.

Williams is not the heart and soul of Star Wars and Superman, he is one of its most important contributors to be sure but both franchises successes is down to the hard work and talent of many many people.

I don't know if Williams is "the heart & soul of Star Wars", but these images are lifeless without his music. In fact the film comes across like some silly Liugi Cozzi or Roger Corman 70s exploitation flick (albeit with handsome production value).
