Is there any interest on the part of the labels to partner with HDTracks or PonoMusic to sell their albums as lossless downloads? I would totally be down with that. I have enjoyed many CDs from Intrada, LaLaLand, and Varese Sarabande. The music is pretty incredible on CD. I can only imagine how much more it would be in 96/24 lossless. Anyone else? What currently available scores would you snatch up? I would sell a bunch of plasma for the Star Trek TOS set.

I would surely buy lossless downloads. Real lossless though, not upsampled gimmicky files.

Indeed. I trust the powers that be at the specialty labels that if they would ever consider branching out into Hi Res downloads, that the masters would be truly untouched and untinkered with.

Note that often the rights they have to release scores only extend to the CDs. It's not that the labels wouldn't do it, they just don't have the actual rights to.

Yes there is "interest" and it is being talked about. But expanded releases that have more than one licensor are problematic because any entity wanting to put them out would need to do the separate licenses just as a CD label would. So far it seems that the big record labels (UMG, WMG & SME) are interested in putting out the original album masters themselves and not in allowing other labels to put out hi-res expanded versions.

My friends at a couple of the labels have put these out. Problem is, sales have been poor. Like any business, if you can only sell a small amount of these, smaller labels aren't going to spend the resources to put these out. WMG and UMG for example, put out many of these because both of those labels have catalog initiatives where they have been remastering and archiving their deep catalogs.

Until the remasterings are done right, the sales won't come. At least from my end. It seems to be a Catch-22, doesn't it?

Thanx for the insight. I'm sure market penetration is a big factor, too. We're niche consumers, after all. Still, it would certainly be wonderful to hear the uncompressed masters of these albums. With the skills of these producers, *cough*Neil S. Bulk!*cough, would there be much re-tweaking to be done?

Whenever I've suggested this, or mentioned a minor label that does it, both members and some labels have said they prefer physical discs and inserts.

I get that. There's something cool about a tactile experience. It rots that the only physical medium to offer full uncompressed sound brings with it crackles, skips, and pops.
