ECM has released a new three-cd set of piano arrangements (and sometimes much more than arrangements) of many of Stephen Sondheim's best songs. Includes works by film composers Thomas Newman, David Shire, Peter Golub, etc.

"US concert pianist Anthony de Mare pays tribute to Stephen Sondheim in a fascinating project. De Mare invited composers from a broad variety of genres from Sondheims own world of musical theater to jazz, classical, pop, film and beyond to re-imagine a Sondheim song of their choice as a solo piano piece.

"Contributing re-composers included Steve Reich, Wynton Marsalis, Mark-Anthony Turnage, Fred Hersch, Ethan Iverson, William Bolcom, Duncan Sheik, Nico Muhly, Eve Beglarian, Gabriel Kahane, Thomas Newman, Jake Heggie, and more - in total, 36 composers, ranging in age from 30 75 and representing seven countries and 29 Grammy, Pulitzer, Tony, Academy and Emmy Awards!"

Hmm, no one at all on this board cares about film composers and many others responding musically to one of the preiminent stage and screen composers of our time?

Well in the words of Luke Skywalker, I do. I care.

There, maybe a Star Wars reference will garner a response.

Actually, I'm intrigued, as a Sondheim fan and a Shire and Newman fan. But I haven't had a chance to listen to the samples yet. So I kept my mouth shut.

But I care!

Thanks, always hard to know if silence is disinterest or just, well, silence.

Sometimes, Sean, some of us are away for a while, and missed it on the first posting.

Anyway it's an interesting project. I'm sorry to see nobody seemed to have liked anything from "Passion." Or did I miss something?

Yes, David, I suspected some folks just missed it. But I hate saying "bumped" and like to see if goading gets a response. And it does, sometimes! wink

I actually just received this myself tonight and must sheepishly admit that I have only glancing familiarity with Passion, but no, it doesn't look like it. But it does look like a few numbers combine more than one song, so if so I wonder..... It will take me a while to fit in the careful listening this will require.

Found it! The number arranged from Passion is Perpetual Happiness by Eve Belgarian.

'Passion' is a favourite of mine, I would recommend the complete 2013 NYC cast revival recording. One of Steve's most romantic and melodic scores. This new release does seem interesting, I should pick it up. Is it all just solo piano however? I can find that a bit tiresome to listen to pretty quickly. 3CDs, and a fine track listing. Thanks for the link Sean.

Yes, these are all arrangements commissioned for the pianist, so yes, just piano. Duncan Sheik's Johanna in Space does feature "dozens of takes of guitar improvisation through a tape echo" as an environment for the piano. And Steve Reich's Finishing the Hat version is for two pianos.

But that's all I can discern from notes and the web. I'll do more of my sense of this when I get more time to listen.

Okay, I'm here Sean. I didn't join in because I'm not a Sondheim lover, and I prefer people who chime in to contribute positive remarks about a composer. I will say that one song of his that I really do like is "Being Alive." Still, I'll check out the samples.
