Any fans of THE BLUES BROTHERS? The first film, that is.
With Intrada working away on Universal properties, I think that an updated soundtrack album from the first film would find an audience beyond our precious community.
Outside of the Atlantic Records soundtrack missing several key musical moments, some of the songs represented on the album are longer in the film, have a different mix, or a complete ending rather than a “repeat until fade” (such as “Shake a Tail Feather”).
For instance:
1.) There’s a timpani roll in “She Caught the Katy” accompanying the BLUES BROTHERS credit that is not on the album. The film mix is also more spacious.
2.) The film version of the “Peter Gunn Theme” has a more prominent piano and bass line. The instruments are also panned differently.
3.) “Old Landmark” misses out on Elmer Bernstein's “God Music” overdub on the album.
4.) “Jailhouse Rock” misses out on the featured vocalists signing a line each towards the conclusion.
5.) The Blues Brothers instrumental theme, “I Can’t Turn You Loose” heard during the mall chase and later at the Palace Hotel isn’t represented on the current album.
6.) “Boom Boom” performed on-screen by John Lee Hooker is missing from the album.
And much more!
An expanded soundtrack sporting the film mixes would be most welcomed.
If this does happen, I wouldn't bet on it coming from Intrada or any of the specialty labels (the red tape involved for all the various rights would be a killer for them, but not for Atlantic).
Big fan of BLUES BROTHERS here -- both film and album.
However, I'm not sure there's anything to be gained from an expanded release. If so, that would be for some of Ira Newborn's score, but to be honest I can't remember how much of it is in the film.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts everyone. Especially interesting to read that some sort of work has already been done on this. Yes, it's probably a rights nightmare given all of the artists involved and the original Atlantic album. Maybe it will happen one day.

Well, I'm not sure how much work has been done. All we have are message board posts from a couple years ago. As a little teaser, they posted a clean version of "Can't Turn You Loose" that the band plays as Curtis introduces Jake and Elwood. I can't say I've heard this particular piece on its own before. There's even studio noise at the beginning.
I've always wanted an expanded Blues Brothers soundtrack with the film versions of the songs (I don't care for most of the rerecordings on the current soundtrack).
There is a b**t floating around with the studio recordings of the film versions (with slates and countdowns).
I'd buy a legitimate expanded soundtrack in a heartbeat.
