BASIC INSTINCT (2-CD SET)
Music Composed and Conducted by Jerry Goldsmith
Limited edition of 2000 units

Crossing legs! Quartet Records and Studio Canal are proud to present the ultimate 2-CD set of Jerry Goldsmith’s Academy Award® nominated noir score for Paul Verhoeven’s classic erotic thriller Basic Instinct (1992), starring Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone.

For his second collaboration with director Paul Verhoeven (after Total Recall), Jerry Goldsmith composed one of his most famous and iconic scores—atmospheric and sensual, elegantly orchestrated, with a memorable main theme reminiscent of Bernard Herrmann.

At the time of the film’s premiere, Varèse Sarabande issued a fabulous 45-minutes CD produced by Goldsmith himself—a masterful presentation of the score’s highlights. Ten years later, Prometheus Records released an expanded version, with much of the music presented in film order, but still missing a pivotal moment and several alternate takes. Now, 23 years later, Quartet Records has finally done justice to this Goldsmith masterpiece. This new release includes all of the music recorded for the film, with correct edits, actual track titles, “An Unending Story” as heard in the film, and alternate takes recorded by Goldsmith for the shorter R-rated version of the film. Also included is the original album produced by the composer, featuring some slightly shorter cues and an alternate ending. All of the music was recorded in London with Goldsmith conducting The National Philharmonic Orchestra.

Both film score and album version have been entirely remixed and remastered from the original digital multi-track tapes by original scoring mixer Bruce Botnick for this edition—the score has, quite simply, never sounded better! Produced by Neil S. Bulk and Bruce Botnick, the album includes in-depth liner notes from film music writer Daniel Schweiger in a lavishly designed 24-page full-color booklet.

Verhoeven told me two months ago.

Incredible! Only quibble, it seems like we'll have to keep the prometheus release of the full original version of "An Unending Story"

What was the "missing pivotal moment"?

Was it Track 10 "What's Between You?"

That just appears to be what was previously titled "Untitled"

I've been told this new release has the original version

Glad I held off on a second hand Prometheus. Also incredibly glad this has the film version of the end at last! Had the pleasure of watching this with a live commentary by Joe Eszterhas at a screenwriting event in London a couple of years ago. He remarked on the score a few times, and I was hoping then for a proper re-issue at some point.

Wonderful score by jerry.
He manages to pitch exactly right the sexual charged undercurrent of a totally unstoppable seven-steps ahead femme fatale, without makin it sound sleazy or naff, its enticing but relentless.
We are very lucky getting serious full-length presentations like this.

Eh I'm happy with my prometheus album. No need for me to double dip for 8 extra minutes of music that wasn't included on the prometheus reissue.

The last time Quartet put out a Goldsmith score (I think it was King Solomon's Mines) they gave clues/hints beforehand. This one came out without any warning. What a great surprise!

I've long wondered if Varese somehow had domestic-only perpetuity rights on this high-profile title, because I otherwise would have expected Intrada or LLL to grab it. That would explain why only Prometheus and Quartet, which are not based in the U.S., could do expanded versions.

Speculation aside, this looks like a great, definitive release and I'm happy that I'll be able to retire my Prometheus. Very cool that Bruce Botnick was involved (and interesting that he remixed and remastered his original album too). With Neil at the helm as well we all know this closes the book on this famous score.

Ordered! (Along with their discounted Canadian Bacon - uh, the album, that is.) big grin

I figured this one would be revisited one day... what a pleasant surprise.

I mentioned this to a friend of mine the other day (Yes, I have friends. Fine, I don't know who those people are to me, honestly.), but the original Prometheus expanded release just looked so ugly and phony that I felt unclean every time I listened to it, the score to a sleaze-filled sex thriller. Glad they went with the original art.

I would be too if the new samples didn't sound so great. I'll still have to think about it as this is Jerry's Verhoeven score I play the least.

I never had the original release. I held off on the Prometheus 'cause the sound quality just wasn't, well, I thought it could be better. I waited for years thinking maybe I'll pick up a cheap used Prometheus version, but this certainly has rectofied all of that.

To bad it has the same artwork again i think it is a bit boring, the prometheus cover would have been nicer wink

I like this part: "...actual track titles..."

Yeah, the Prometheus one was sketchy from the packaging to the sound quality, but it was great to finally hear "One Shot" - I love that cue.

I'm really glad to see Quartet going out of its way to praise Goldsmith's album assembly (and of course include it), because it's absolutely perfect. This is a seminal Goldsmith work and worthy of an archival release, though personally I'm happy with the original album. (Eighty minutes is a LOT of thrusting.) I'm excited for the album remaster and may have to buy this set for that alone.

What was the "missing pivotal moment"?

Curious about this, too. Anyone?
