How bad is it? I keep hearing that it's mostly labor of love which is true.

I was wondering how do labels like Intrada, La la land etc. feel about crowdfunding? It's an interesting idea. The great thing about it is that with crowdfunding you at least already have customers who are willing to buy the product.

I've said this before. I think it's a terrible business model. Crowdfunding seems like a great idea until everyone does it. Then its about who's money do labels tie up first? Once a large group commit to several crowdfunding projects, others will suffer.

The collector may miss out on something unexpected because they already committed their budget to something else. Right now you can gauge how bad you want something with how long it might stay in print. Pass on something now expecting something more interesting may come in the coming weeks.

There's also a lot to be said for the impulse buyer. Something you wouldn't commit too up front, but if it just comes out as a surprise, you might buy it on the spot when the excitement is high. Which is another reason why crowd funding is a terrible way for gauging interest in a title.

Not everyone can commit up front either. They have to save, or unexpected things happen like car repairs, medical bills, etc.

Intrada pretty much said in the interview, economics, licensing, popularity of titles are all variables. But they are still doing quite well. That's business.

In your opinion what might be a better alternative?

Someone on here actually asking for my advice? This is a first! Seriously the labels know their business and don't need our advice. Some labels have cut back on releases so there's less glut, others are getting into the trendy Vinyl market. Some have long switched from limited editions, to selling while demand lasts. As far as I know they are doing fine even in these turbulent times.
