My favorite score of the year so far.Huge orchestral score with 80% 90s Debney, and 10% 2000s Brian Tyler and 10% How to train your dragon quality Powell.Yes, the main theme is very similar to Holdridges Beastmaster, but other than that you get a big emotional, rousing action adventure score with very little mickey mousing.each track has highlights, the last 3 tracks alone are worth it.i loved every second of it.much much more enjoyable than Powells Pan.

The Battlerstar/Beastmaster theme lift is quite distracting. Every time I heard that melody my enjoyment of the score diminished significantly. What started off as something promising turned into something disappointing.

I'll give this one another go in a few days to see if the theme rip still bothers me (I was quite forgiving whenever Horner did it) because the surrounding material is quite good. It's too bad though that the director/producer or whomever wouldn't let Wallfisch write is own theme.

happens all the time.and fortunately as far as i can tell its the only lift.the score might not be hugely original but is also incredibly entertaining and hits all the right notes for me.btw i know people who cant listen to beastmaster because of the battlestar similarities. get over over it.that shouldnt be enough to ruin an otherswise great score for you.

Now that I think of it this might be this year's IRON WILL. That score is so chalked full of tempitus it's not even funny... but for some reason I love it. I'm going to give Gamba another shot... and now that I know what to expect I might just like it because it's a big adventure score in a style that I love.

But my first critical listen was quite disappointing. I mean, "First Fight" could be an alternate take of Williams' "Zam The Assassin and Chase Through Coruscant"

Ah, you should familiarize yourself with Philippe Rombi's WAR OF THE BUTTONS if you want a 2010's score inexplicably rife with, erm, "references" to popular 80's and 90's Hollywood family film scores...

I'll have to check this one out, never heard of it. I love the big lush portions of Wallfisch's PETER PAN but his more modern-sounding works haven't done a lot for me. Seems like a talented fellow when allowed to do his thing.

The Battlestar Theme repurposed for Beastmaster always bothered me, those progressions are so distinct that it's more distracting than in other circumstances for some reason. As much as I love love LOVE Holdridge (and 80's fantasy scoring of a symphonic nature), I can't say I visit it a whole ton... Especially with Robert Folk's BRILLIANT Beastmaster 2 leaving it in the dust as it so does!

I've got to chime in here and say that GAMBA is pretty great -- a really rousing and melodic orchestral score.

It is certainly a notch above the usual modern score and it is nice to hear a largely orchestral score, and an animated score that doesn't deviate too much from the full orchestra. I would have to listen to beastmaster some more to hear the lift because it doesn't register with me automatically. Though it has some solid themes at times I think it could use some better developed middle passages.

Our review of this solid, if somewhat derivative, score:

It's fine, but overall it's a bit too "busy" for my taste these days, so it went out of my collection after 2-3 listens. Wallfisch is a tremendous talent, though, no doubt about that.
