I don't do nostalgia. I like the music.

Not music,sound designe.

One man's sound design is another man's music. I will take the Videodrome score, or music, or sound design, or whatever you want to call it, over much of what gets discussed around here.

I recently watched the movie again (bought the excellent blu-ray set put out by Arrow Video) and was reminded how well the score works within the movie. Another unique approach by Shore for one of Cronenberg's best. The original album is OOP, I wonder if it can be expanded?

I don't know how much more there is, but I have the LP, and it must clock in at around 35 minutes. I love it.

The old Varese album still appears readily available on the secondary market, though perhaps it would make a good candidate for Shore's Howe Records label if Varese doesn't own it in perpetuity.

Personally, I'd much rather see a reissue of a much harder to find Shore/Cronenberg collabo, "Spider", which only got a soundtrack release in France if I'm not mistaken.

Found this a while back to have a listen but i have to say i was disappointed. Just couldn't connect with any of the score and i was glad i hadn't forked out the hefty sums for the current cd.
Always loved VIDEODROME and still often play it. Loved the track 'a slow burn' which doesn't seem to be anywhere in the film ( well...the first part of it)

Spook,

I just fired off an email to your address posted in your profile. Let me know what you think.

Just had to say I have the Varese CD and I think the audio is incredible on it. I've always loved really cool electronic film scores. It seems to me though this album is really an album that contains what one would call inspired by the film. I think the CD could be expanded and I'd bet Howe records would eventually tackle it.

Always liked this score and Crash which was expanded on Howe and also The Game. They all have dark themes.

It's definitely not noise but it is a different kind of score and fits perfectly into that film. I can't imagine any other film score working there.

I noticed when I was listening to this CD in my OPPO Blu player it listed the HDCD logo for the format. I have to admit the audio sounds great.

Yeah, not sure it needs an expanded or remastered release (is there music missing that I'm unaware of?) but it definitely should be reissued officially. You're right - it does sound pretty damn good.

It needs to be re-done. A straight re-issue would include the puzzling dialogue, (not from the film), and sound effects on the opening track. I could do without those on a re-issue. There is some music that was not released, and quite a bit of source music that is detailed in another FSM thread somewhere.

What really is long overdue to reissue are Shore's scores to:

SCANNERS & THE BROOD

Silva Screen issued a 3-fer that contained suites of those plus DEAD RINGERS which got expanded on a solo disc by HOWE.

SCANNERS is effectively dissonant.
BROOD is a strings only affair.

Would love to see those revisited.

As for VIDEODROME,
When Varèse issued the CD, I pounced on it, nuff said! big grin

There is nothing "puzzling" about the voiceover. It sets the mood for the album and translates the film's aesthetic for the audio medium.

If a reissue omitted the dialog and the sound effects, I would boycott it and just buy the original (which I have on vinyl).

I have asked elsewhere if the trade show music, which sounds like an outtake from Les Baxter's 1970 "Que Mango" album, is original music composed by Shore or library music. I have never found out.
