I decided to (at least try) go through all 8 discs of Varèse's ELM box. It's a shame that I was able to start as late as I did, 4.00 PM local time. I'm drinking yesterday's leftover Tequila and beer with lime.
How did you listen to this set? Do you ever listen to such boxes at one sitting?

I started with the scores I always liked best (1, 2, 5 and of course New Nightmare), then listened to the rest. 3, 4, and Freddy VS Jason each have their highlights, but I didn't really get into those scores on the whole (Dream Warriors definitely deserved a better score. Though oddly enough, I liked Ken Harrison's music a bit better than Angelo's).

I'd recommend listening to 1 followed directly by 4. Safan's score to #4 was a return to the themes and style of the original (after the series moved away for two scores). He does a Charles Bernstein impersonation and it's a frankly dazzling job.

He captures the sounds and general ideas perfectly whilst adding his own stamp and fabulous music. Just listen to track 4 to hear what Bernstein's Elm Street sounds like in Safan's hands.

Halfway through am I. Thusfar the music has been quite terrible. I'm not a fan of synths, so I don't care for this. Young's score for the first sequel was at least orchestral, but is was mostly sustained sounds and not really much 'composing'.
I'm not complaining. My opinions on the quality of the music are my problem. I'm glad to have this box of music. The presentation is very nice. Just yesterday I was showing off my collecrtion to a person who had not seen my CDs before. From my specialty shelf I took out this box and my facebookfriend immediately guessed Elm Street. So, Varèse, keep these coming.

New Nightmare is orchestrated, so here's hoping you get into that more.
I like some of the other scores, but honestly, I spent $100 just to get New Nightmare. I love the score (and film) that darn much.

I haven't had time to listen to all of them in one sitting (yet). So far I've just skipped around a lot. When I do actually get to the inevitable marathon, I'll probably just go in order of release.

Actually, today would have been a good day for this marathon being that it is the 31st Anniversary of the release of the first film.

I actually started with Dream Warriors (Part 3) just to hear all of Ken Harrisons music which I love, then it was Part 1, Freddys Revenge (Part 2) followed by New Nightmare. These are the ones I like in the Elmstreet series and not to fond of Part 4,5,6 amd Freddy Vs Jason though.
A great box from Varese and the only thing I didn´t like with the set, was that it didn´t keep its original covers on each CD, otherwise a nice box

I listened to them in order, mostly on the bus going to and from work.

Original, FREDDY'S REVENGE, and NEW NIGHTMARE are awesome. I was left unimpressed by DREAM WARRIORS and DREAM MASTER, particularly after all the raving about the latter on the board. DREAM CHILD had a lot more highlights than I remember from the film (which has few, if any highlights). FREDDY'S DEAD is pretty good, but not as memorable as the other Brian May scores I've heard (i.e MAD MAX).

Haven't got around to FREDDY VS JASON yet.

Some comments, from best to worst score IMO:

Part 1 - it is the more effective/memorable score. The additional tracks sound good, even being in mono (and not being complete) I liked this expansion a lot.

Part 7 - is the highlight of the set. I always wanted this one complete and finally having the "Odyssey", "Julie Killed" and all the finale of the film was the main reason I got this set. On this presentation of the score the only two things I did not liked very much is that Chase's Blues is shortned and the End Credits have the same jarring edits that are in the movie. I'd have preferred to have the clean track for the beginning of the credits without the following cut and paste job with the tracks already available in the score (like Lalaland did with Alien Resurrection). I also noted that the tracks TV show and the following Freddys Theme are not merged as they are in the film and on the previous album. But I liked them separated.

Part 3 - I like this score and consider it the most underrated. But the better parts for me are the Ken Harrison tracks. I whish he could have written a full score for the series. Unfortunately the sound on the bonus portion of this score is really bad. I'm glad that we can finally hear this music but sad that it was not better preserved by Newline.

Part 2 - Is a score I also consider highly effective. [[Can someone please indicate the chronological order of this score?]]

Part 6 - I like how Brian May quotes the theme with the orchestra and the portions inspired by Night On Bald Mountain. But the score does not have much more than that and it is one that I don't return to very oftenly.

Part 5 - I like the gothic tone on this. The big organ and choral parts. I think it is a good score that works well in the picture.

Part 4 - Is my least favourite score in the original series. I really do not see a resemblance with the style and sound of the first (except for the direct tracking of part 1 music). It is not bad and I still listen to it from time to time (maybe more than 6 and 5) but I expected more from Craig Safan.

Freddy vs. Jason - This is my least favourite in the series. I like some scores by Graeme Revell but this one only comes alive in the spare quotes of the nightmare and Jason themes.
