FWIW, a few years before his death, Roger Ebert reported on his website a then-recent all-time favorite film poll which had named HUNTER to the top, Number One spot.

Well I did mean in terms of its innovative approach, but honestly the more times I watch it, the more I boost it up my list of all time great American film masterworks. Perhaps as Ebert did. Thanks Preston for the vote of confidence. I was hoping you would see my review but I was worried (and perhaps still am) that it might have disappointed you somewhat. Anyway I hope you liked it. I mentioned your excellent book on the making of the film in this month's 'Now Listen To Me..." here: http://thecinemacafe.com/the-cinema-treasure-hunter/2015/11/5/now-listen-to-me

Hi, Arthur -- I haven't had time to do more than skim your HUNTER treatise so far, because I'm trying to catch up on everything that piled up while I was gone for 6 weeks. So I will read it, but I'm already certain it won't disappoint me. You've never let me down yet. (I guess THAT is a vote of confidence!) BTW, if I wasn't clear about it, Ebert wasn't expressing his own (high) opinion of HUNTER, he was reporting the results of some poll or other. It led to quite an extensive set of comments, (some of them from me, naturally.)

The "vote of confidence" I was referring to was specifically in regards to placing 'Hunter' in the ranks of the others I mentioned in terms of being "innovative", suggesting that it did in fact belong in the company of such well regarded cinematic achievements as the ones I mentioned. But I do appreciate your clarifications and am resting much easier now as to your thoughts on my review, which I will look forward to hearing about. Maybe I was just a little paranoid. It is after all entitled "Opening Up a Treasure".
