TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 17 TOP GUN 2---Val Kilmer confirmed he's returning as "Iceman" for the sequel, “I just got offered ?Top Gun 2. Not often you get to say “yes” without reading the script… We will all miss Tony Scott one of the kindest gentlemen I’ve ever met in the film biz, but let’s fire up some fighter jets again!!!” Producer Jerry Bruckheimer said the sequel plot involves drone warfare, “The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones? [Tom Cruise as Maverick] is going to show them that they’re not obsolete. They’re here to stay." ALIEN: COVENANT---20th Century Fox released a synopsis for the sequel, "Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in ALIEN with ALIEN: COVENANT, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with PROMETHEUS - and connects directly to Scott's 1979 seminal work of science fiction. Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world - whose sole inhabitant is the 'synthetic' David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition." BLADE RUNNER 2---Ryan Gosling confirmed he's co-starring with Harrison Ford in the sequel but wouldn't comment on what his role is, "There's a chip in me and if I say anything more I'll explode if I say anything else." THE DARK TOWER---sources say Matthew McConaughey is being sought for a starring role in the movie based on the Stephen King novel. One source said McConaughey is the top candidate to play Roland Deschain, but another source said he's wanted for villain Randall Flagg. THE HUNTSMAN: WINTER'S WAR---the sequel poster to SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN was released showing Jessica Chastain. Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron and Emily Blunt also star. FAST & FURIOUS---Vin Diesel said prequels and spinoffs are being developed, “We’ve written out story lines for various characters. We’ve been playing with it for a long time. It’s a very rich property and we’re committed to treating it with a lot of class.” MEMENTO---remake underway of the 2000 movie that launched Christopher Nolan's career. The plot involved an amnesiac man who uses tattoos on his body to find his wife's killer. BIRTH OF THE DRAGON---Philip Ng will play Bruce Lee in this movie about the 1960s fight between Lee and Wong Jack Man. WONDERSTRUCK---Julieanne Moore will star in this movie based on the children's book by Brian Selznick (THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABRET).

What? If Alien: Covenant is the sequel to Prometheus, why is Fassbender the only survivor? What happened to Noomi Rapace? I want her back. Anyone want to speculate about this change? This one's fun to parse: "...whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition." I'm not sure there's much wiggle room in here to reassure Rapace/Shaw fans, but David's actually listed as the 'sole inhabitant.' In this context, does the singular "survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition" rule out others, wherever she might be? Clever game: It feels like they've carefully worded things to straddle the line between closing the door on Shaw, while making her the main focus. It's too weird! Shaw was the protagonist of Prometheus, and her omission here feels a little conspicuous. I'd say something's up with this, and they want us to be thinking about it. Or, I guess Shaw devotees should prepare for disappointment. Probably more likely, given the way films are financed with name talent these days, whoever's got the most box office cachet when they're about to roll... --Coop
