Dutch director Martin Koolhoven (Oorlogswinter / Winter in wartime) hired Tom Holkenborg (aka Junkie XL) ot score his Western Brimstone (starring Dakota Fanning and an awesome looking Guy Pearce).
Kinda odd choice as Martin usually is in for more traditional scoring. He hired Donnagio for Oorlogswinter and is a big Morricone fan.
I'm really curious and a little exited what Holkenborg will bring to this picture!
It's a cool choice. Looking forward to hear what he'll come up with. MAD MAX has certain western elements, but is obviously a different beast altogether.
Holkenborg will give the filmmakers what they want. Donaggio, of course, would've been a more inspired choice.
Not really. It depends entirely on what the project is; what style it is etc. If it's more of a "realistic" western, a Bruce Broughton-type score could feel out-of-place.
The director had previously worked with Pino Donaggio, and it was Donaggio that I wrote would be IMO a more inspired choice. I never mentioned Broughton, though I'm certainly a big fan of his.

Just right Thor! I worked on this movie for a couple of weeks! You just have to wait and see...

I know, but Donaggio is also a more traditional and old-school choice. I'm guessing the film calls for something a little different.

The album was released on Spotify today, and HOLY CRAP -- how brilliant this is!
Gorgeous, classical, melancholic darkness. Sure, it channels Samuel Barber on occasion, but that's fine by me. You've NEVER heard JXL in this mode before (except maybe the "Many Mothers" track on FURY ROAD), so I'm hoping it will change some views on the composer, especially from the more conservative crowd.
I have seen this movie tonight at a premiere night in Rotterdam (Holland)-and had the chance to meet the (very nice) director , I must say the music works extremely well in this movie. The score is brilliant, haunting but not overwhelming. It fits the movie very well, never too much...I was very surprised by the beauty of the melody (sometimes great choir) and its classical approach. I asked the Director if they also thought of Ennio Morricone because Martin is an extreme western fanatic. They absolutely had him in mind but at the end he thought it would give the movie just a too much too recognisable westernlike sound which he didn't like to go with his movie. He was honest and said that this project and the making of the film took him several years so he was also a bit afraid of Ennio's age. Dakota Fanning was very impressive in her role I haven't seen here since The War of the Worlds but she has grown up nice in a very mature way. The movie is very extreme in several ways but you must be sure you see it in the complete and uncut version.
