CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR---trailer released for the sequel.

Trailer link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVdV-lxRPFo

THE MUMMY---Tom Cruise is in talks to star in the Universal Pictures reboot of its horror movie franchise which will be set in the present. It's not known what role he will play. Alex Kurtzman is the director and Jon Spaihts (PROMETHEUS) will write the script.

TREMORS---Kevin Bacon confirmed he will be the star/executive producer of a tv series based on his 1990 monster movie. The tv series will be set in the original movie's setting of Perfection, Nevada. It's not known if Fred Ward or other cast members will also be returning.

JOHN CARPENTER---the horror director (HALLOWEEN, THE THING) is developing tv pilots for four different horror tv series. They are "waiting to go to network" and will "push the boundaries of what's horror". Carpenter said, "As far as I'm concerned, we'll do all of them.... There's sci-fi, there's horror, there's one that I guess would be [a] sci fi-horror futuristic kind of thing. They're all across the board. I think they'll fulfill what people expect out of him by also being unpredictable."

STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE-PART I---Ron Howard said he tuned down an offer from George Lucas to direct THE PHANTOM MENACE, "It was an honor, but it would’ve been just too daunting. He told me that he had talked to [Robert] Zemeckis, he talked to me, he talked to Steven Spielberg. I was the third one he spoke to. They'd all said the same thing: 'George, you should just do it!' Nobody wanted to follow that act, I don't think, at that point." He added, "I was never a comic-book guy. I've never said yes to one."

ARROW---Tom Amandes (EVERWOOD) will play villain THE Calculator who "uses his advanced skills in computer science and internet manipulation to blackmail Roy (Colton Haynes) out of retirement to do his bidding, which leads to an epic battle with Team Arrow."

MARVEL'S LUKE CAGE---Sonia Braga will play the mother of Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson) in the Netflix series.

JUSTICE LEAGUE PART ONE---a source claims the movie plot involves "the world's greatest heroes are assembled to form the Justice League, to combat a threat beyond each individual's capabilities. The story involves Darkseid planning the destruction of Earth by blasting it with a ray that'll move Apokolips into the Earth's place."

FIRST MAN---Ryan Gosling is being sought to star in the biomovie based on the book about astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the Moon , FIRST MAN: A LIFE OF NEIL A. ARMSTRONG.

MEN IN BLACK---producer Laurie MacDonald said about the next sequel which is in the early development stage, "There will be a prominent woman in black in the fourth [MIB film]", and it will be "a reinvention" that will move away from Agent J and Agent K. She said about Will Smith returning, "Never count Will out."

SUPERGIRL---Supergirl's 13 year-old cousin, Kal-El (Superman), will be featured in flashbacks.

A pretty interesting statement considering Howard directed two great fantasy films (Willow and Cocoon - okay, I'm pushing it on that second one).

But...would they have become a quagmire with someone else calling the shots behind the camera? I guess we'll find out when The Force Awakens opens in a few weeks...

The Captain America trailer looks decent. I rather liked the last Captain America. The Marvel films are usually pretty entertaining at least, though i haven't seen the Thor ones.

I think so because, (pardon the pun) Lucas would have remained the overriding "force" in those productions.

Well, it would depend on the force* of character of the director. Lucas has said TESB was his least favourite of the films due to feeling he lost control. That was why he hired Marquand for ROTJ, he was a director for hire, unlike Kirschner who wanted to input more. All the directors Howard mentions are strong forces, and would've challenged Lucas more.

Re TFA, Lucas seems now to be very much sitting quietly on the sidelines, so Abrams and Kennedy get to call the shots, with some reference to Disney's executives of course.

*pun intended smile

Exactly. I'm sure Howard was just being diplomatic with his phrasing. In an interview for the TV documentary series The Directors, he said that he didn't enjoy Willow as an experience or a film because he was making someone else's film on their terms. I'm sure he didn't want to repeat that experience.

The most telling of the lines for me were when he said something to the effect, " I just wanted to tell a good story, and Disney said they wanted to do something for the fans."

Thus we got what looks like a "fangasmic" Star Wars sequel.

@ Nicholas_DW - Agreed, RH is a classy guy.
@ Ian J. - Spielberg has already demonstrated with Crystal Skull, he would just do it as a favor for Lucas with little personal input.

Which is where he should be. Didn't he "walk away" to the tune of FOUR BILLION?!

I watched the linked news video after I had written that. It certainly appears that's he fully walked away with his 'divorce' from the franchise (what a divorce settlement!). I suppose I thought he might still be wanting to be involved in some way and might have been doing some 'coaching from the sidelines'.

The Mummy, set in modern times, staring Tom Cruise, & written by the man who wrote Prometheus (it's a wonder he can get another writing gig after that one). I hate to sound negative all the time (I don't really), but it's not looking good.

On a non-Star Wars note, Captain America: Civil War looks outstanding; I'm looking forward to it. It looks to have the same tone as Winter Soldier. I also appreciate the continued use of highly-respected, veteran actors in key roles; a rather slender-looking William Hurt assumes that position here.

You're correct, except you need to reverse the order of the titles in regards to "pushing it."

Agreed. It is great seeing William Hurt back in a Marvel film. I had always assumed he was done after Incredible Hulk. The trailer has a great balance of action and character moments. I love the scene with Cap, the Winter Soldier and Iron Man fighting. The trailer already looks much better than the story the film was inspired from, and hopefully the movie lives up to the trailer.

Some of the notable actors with great screen presence would include (but not limited to): Tommy Lee Jones in the first Cap movie, Robert Redford in Winter Soldier, and Michael Douglas in Ant-Man. Each actor was excellent in those respective roles. I'd also include Samuel L. Jackson in that list, even if he is a recurring character in the MCU.

...and more predictable solium panning.

Since you have never read any Marvel comics you would have no clue that those things you list---minus the deadpan acting--are longstanding aspects of their "house" style and are therefore completely appropriate in Marvel movies.

Oh, and good luck getting your Midichlorians to tingle when you are predictably disappointed by The Marketing Force Awakens. wink

Read some in the mid 70's but yeah, it's a distant memory.
