Does anyone here know of an online virus scan website that will scan my computer for free, and take care of any viruses?
My computer is running R-E-A-L-L-Y S.......L.........O.....................................W. I have "Propel Accelerator" on my computer and until recently it did a very good job of speeding up my connection to websites!

Once in a while, a super-slow computer will be due to a hardware problem. One of the RAM memory chips goes bad. The machine will still start up and run, but it takes a lot longer to do things. That's probably not your situation, but it could be.

P.S. Once at the malewarebytes site, hover your cursor over "For Home" at the top of the page and click "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free." On the next page, click "Free Download." Choose "Save File" and follow the steps to complete the installation process. Once installed, run a complete scan.

I can't get past the "free download" page, because when I click THAT, that damned "Internet Explorer Can Not Display The Webpage". Any way around THAT? That's my only browser.

Well, downloading Malwarebytes cannot harm your computer, so if you can, close out of that chameleonic false warning and download the darn thing.

https://www.malwarebytes.org is great.

Yes it is, but it isn't anti-virus software.

I recommend Avast as free and effective anti-virus protection.

I feel that CNET is great for finding software, with much to choose from that is free, like "Malewarebytes" fro anti-malware. I use the free "AVG" anti-virus, which I downloaded from CNET, as one can feel confident in getting them from there, without too much concern about anything untoward piggy-backed. Also "C Cleaner" (also a free version offered), is good for maintaining a better operating PC. I run these three regularly. CNET downloads is a good source for reviews and shows what software is the most popular.

Malwarebytes is one of the top best free anti-virus programs, but it's a program you download.

For a terrific one-time use (well, delete your cookies and go again way later when you may need it) deep online scanner, try ESET.

Sorry to repeat myself but Malwarebytes isn't anti-virus software and if you rely on that software alone you're going to be in trouble.

There does seem to be a bit of confusion about this in this thread so to clarify, here's what the manufacturer says themselves:

"Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not meant to be a replacement for antivirus software. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a complementary but essential program which detects and removes zero-day malware and "Malware in the Wild".

Good point. I jsut refer to them all as anti-virus programs, even though they are not.

Jim, have you also considered -- once you are done scanning -- that it's not necessarily an infection? HAve you installed or downloaded new programs? If so and you are using Windows, try going back to the last Restore Point (if you have been creating them like you should be) you know was clean and see what happens.

Do you do proper cleaning up? Every week, even every day at times, I do the following:

Diskc Cleanup (check what ever boxes you need to)
Run the program TFC (Temp File Cleaner, in Administrator mode; available at bleepingcomputer.com)
Restart
Then I Defrag the main drive.

Various programs of different kinds I recommand:
ADWCleaner:
www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/dl/125/

Malwarebytes:
www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/dl/7/

TDSSKiller:
www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/tdsskiller/dl/4/

RKill:
www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/

Also, if you don't have a firewall, get one immediately. But make sure you have one that blocks both incoming and outgoing threats. Some only block one way.

If you are using a wireless internet signal, make sure you have set up a strong password for it so anybody within the broadcast singal can't jsut get on and drag it down, especially multiple people and what ever amount of data transfering they might be doing.

I don't think I've ever installed ANY programs.
My computer is suppose to automatically de-grag every Wednesday, though I did it last Wednesday.

I have dial-up.
I have no idea if I have a firewall on my computer or not.

Well, there's you're problem -- you're de-graging the computer. ;-)

Seriously though, defraging depends on your use. I work with a gigabyte or more of data on the comptuer every day, and it can slow the computer down and even cause audio in streams to skip. So I have to run TFC and defrag to keep things running smoothly. If you work with heavy amounts daily, you'll probably want to defrag mroe than once a week, after other clean ups.

I'd seriously consult the experts at the (appropriate) bleepingcomputer.com forum. You are nothign short of lucky if you haven't already been infected from a lack of firewall. You've no idea how lucky. And if you are infected, they'll need to help you. And even then, with certain malicious programs, there's no way for even seasoned experts to know if it's completely out -- they'll tell you in some instances the best thing to do is a complete re-install of windows.

They'll lead you through long complicated steps which can takes a week or more. An intial repsonse can take the some amount of time.

One of the false things malware and anti-virus programs and other types of cleaners give you is that if it finds something and quarantines or deletes it, is that you are safe and clean.

If I had access to e-mail, I'd help you out further there, but for now this will have to do.

Justin....
All I do on my computer is surf the net and e-mail friends.... I don't download any videos since I have dial up.
BTW.... how can I tell if my computer has a firewall? Wouldn't it have been installed at the factory when the computer was made?

Not necessarily, and not all firewalls are equal, plus settings may need to be adjusted.

If you are using Windows, it should still come with a firewall. Right now, as I see it, Windows Firewall is the best recommended free firewall for Windows (assuming you are on Windows). It would good to look into what settings are good for protection.
