It's not often that I do announcement threads, but now I wanted to make an exception for this milestone release in Nordic film music history! From PlantSound Records:

"We are extremely proud to present the first ever release of the score for the iconic Norwegian film ‘Pinchcliffe Grand Prix’, released in 1975 by Caprino Studios. The music – composed by Danish composer Bent Fabricius-Bjerre – has long been hailed as one of the greatest scores of its age, and yet it has remained unavailable until now!

Pinchcliffe (or Flåklypa in Norwegian / Bjergkøbing in Danish) Grand Prix is the most succesful Norwegian film of all time. Since its release in 1975 it has sold more than 5 million theatre tickets, which is quite an achievement considering there are only 5 million people living in Norway!! The movie also became very popular outside of Norway, and still has a big following in Europe, Asia and America.

Built on the famous characters created by Kjell Aukrust, Pinchcliffe Grand Prix is a true stop-motion masterpiece made possible largely due to the tireless efforts of the films creator Ivo Caprino.

The main character Reodor (eng. Theodore) lives in the small town of Pinchcliffe. An inventor/bicycle repair man, he and his two companions Ludwig (eng. Lambert), a pessimistic and melancholic hedgehog, and Solan (eng. Sonny) an overly energetic and positive Magpie, get by doing a bit of work for whomever happens to stop by. One day Reodor’s old apprentice Rudolph – now a famous racing driver – appears on tv, boasting that he is unbeatable and will accept any challenge. He contributes his succes to a device he claims to have invented, that makes his car unbeatable. Reodor regonizes the device as one of his own inventions, and the gang decide to challenge Rudolph, by building Reodors masterpiece, the car ‘Il Tempo Gigante’.

Many contributes part of the film’s succes to the richly thematic score by Bent Fabricius-Bjerre. One of the themes even became so deeply inherent in Norway that many still believe it to be a national folksong. The theme, know as ‘Norwegian Sunet’ has since been covered by many artists, and still remains one of the most beautiful themes ever written.

Now, three months after the film’s 40th anniversary, the original music is finally available for the first time ever.

THE ALBUM

The album is presented in a beautiful limited edition 8 page digipack, with extensive liner notes written by film music expert Mogens Skaaning Høegsberg. The music presented on the album is nearly 50 minutes and includes:

– The complete score*
– Expanded cues, alternate versions, and unused tracks*
– Source music used in the film*
(* only available on this album. The digital release contains only selected material)

This release is limited to 1.000 units, and shipping will start on December 10th. All orders placed before December 10th will recieve free world-wide shipping."

Damn, I missed that due to the rather generic thread title! Oh well, it can't be promoted too much.

Me too! Yeah, especially for Norwegians our age (I assume you're in your late 30s like me), it has a VERY special place in our hearts. But even now with all the new films in the series (another of which is coming in two weeks), it's getting a brand new audience.

Goodness me, I never thought I'd see the day when Thor promoted a complete release of a score, with alternates and extras no less! smile

It must be good. I'll have to check out the sound clips.

It is wonderful, whether you've seen the film or not.

It DID have an original soundtrack back in the day, but it mostly consisted of dialogue and sound effects from the film, so this is not only an expansion, it's basically the first score-only release!

Popular though it may be, I've not heard of this film. I do like what I have heard on the soundtrack, though, as the second, fourth, and fifth cues have a nice "Sound of '74" quality about them. Oh, I also enjoyed the harmonca cue. smile

People of a certain age may have heard this classic hit that Bjerre composed in the US in the 60s, under his pseudonym Bent Fabric:

Your assumption is correct, Thor. I'm 39.

When my father bought our family's first VCR in 1982 (a massive Hitachi VHS), this movie was the first we got. I love everything about it, and I have to say that the recent Norwegian Blu-ray release is spectacular. Highly recommended!

I just ordered two copies of this fabulous release. I have the "music and dialogue"-CD, which I also had on cassette back in the day, but this; wow! Definitely my favourite vintage release of the year!

I totally understand why people outside Scandinavia shrug their shoulders at this release. But despite being the Casablanca and Citizen Kane to us Scandies, it has bloody good music. This has been a holy grail - holier than holiest on it`s musical merit alone - for about 20 years. I petitioned the Caprino family about this many years ago, but nothing happened. But in 2015 Christmas really came early!

Instant buy! And if people ar unfamiliar with the score, check out the samples. Catchy as hell!

Delighted for you, Thor - I know that this is important to you and I still play that sampler with the theme on it.

There are so many wonderful themes in this film!!

It makes you think how many films, with absolutely wonderful music, there are, that you´ve never seen or heard of!!

Pinchcliffe (or Flåklypa in Norwegian) really is a must see!
I´m not sure if it´s available for streaming/rental online, but if you haven´t seen it, do it!! smile
… I bet you won´t forget the music any time soon!!

Especially the famous Norwegian Sunset, but also the other ones! Just fantastic smile

You'll be delighted to hear that we are currently working on releasing the complete score for the 14 Olsen Banden films!

As with Pinchcliffe, we've managed to locate the master tapes that everyone thought were lost!
So far we've found the complete music for the first 7 films, and the hunt continues for the remaining 7 smile
