Steven Moffat has answered new questions on the Husbands of River Song, gave a plot hint for Series 10 and possibly debunked the ongoing Peter Jackson rumours in a new Q&A session last night in New York.

Speaking following the premiere of The Husbands of River Song, Moffat said that the Doctor Who team are currently planning an episode that is “very much ancient world” and that we can very much expect more from Missy in the future.

During the rest of the session, Moffat speaks on what makes River Song special to him as a writer, Class, there being many more series’ of Doctor Who to come, the possibility of Captain Jack returning, the impracticalities of asking Peter Jackson to direct an episode of the series and much much more.

Try not to lose your heads, everyone – but Little Britain’s Matt Lucas is returning to the world of Doctor Who for series 10, following on from his appearance in last year’s Christmas special.

According to a BBC press release, Lucas will be reprising his role as River Song’s former assistant Nardole (last seen as a disembodied head inside a giant robot body), and will appear very early on in the next series – episode one in fact – for what seems to be a semi-regular series of appearances alongside Peter Capaldi and Pearl Mackie.

“I’m chuffed to bits that Nardole is returning to the TARDIS for some more adventures,” Lucas said. “I loved acting with Peter and I’m excited to work with Pearl.”

Head writer and executive producer Steven Moffat (who will be writing the first episode) added: “Delighted and slightly amazed to be welcoming Matt Lucas back on to the TARDIS - and this time it’s not just for Christmas, he’s sticking around. One of the greatest comedy talents on planet Earth is being unleashed on all of time and space.”

Also announced to be joining the series this year are Jekyll & Hyde and Sherlock star Stephanie Hyam and novelist Frank Cottrell Boyce, who will be penning series 10’s second episode after previously writing 2014’s In the Forest of the Night. We love reunions.

Doctor Who will return this Christmas, followed by a new series in 2017

Don't know if I'm interested in Series 10. Capaldi is an okay Doctor I guess, but he really doesn't excite me like the previous two did. Same with the new companion. I'll give her a chance, but she's gotta knock it out of the ballpark with an engaging personality.

The Royle Family star Ralf Little has landed a guest spot in Doctor Who.

Little will begin filming opposite the Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, and his new companion Pearl Mackie in Cardiff on Friday.

The actor, who played Antony Royle in the hit sitcom, previously encountered the Doctor when he voiced Guy Fawkes in video game Doctor Who: The Adventure Games.

The BBC said details of his character will be kept under wraps.

Matt Lucas was last month confirmed as another Doctor Who guest star for series 10.

In the opening episode of the series, he will return as the bumbling Nardole, who viewers met in Christmas episode The Husbands Of River Song.

Can't remember the last time I actually punched the air in excitement at the news of a Doctor Who guest star. Most of the announcements are a case of 'so what?' Sadly the kid from Game of Thrones didn't add much last series, though she went back to being good in her next series of GoT. Maybe Liz Sladen back in 2006. Tim Dalton was another, and of course Bernard Cribbins was lovely.

John Hurt would have done the same if not for Moffat's dumb, dumb, DUMB idea of mucking up the orders of the Doctors!

Filming on block 2 of Doctor Who Series 10 began today (1 August) in Cardiff.

Peter Capaldi and Pearl Mackie were on set and the new episode, written by Sarah Dollard, appears to be taking another trip into the familiar past.

Capaldi has donned top hat and tails for this outing.

The silence around the Doctor Who Christmas special has become almost eerie.

Peter Capaldi and new companion Pearl Mackie are deep into filming on series ten – which is not due to air until 2017 – and yet the BBC have fed us location shots, episode details and news of guest-stars. Meanwhile, enthusiastic fans have, as usual, been sharing their own snaps from the set.

But when it comes to the festive episode – airing in just a few months and surely in the can by now – there's been nothing. No official announcements – and no leaked photos either, which is particularly unusual.

There are a few possible explanations for this (which we go into in further detail here). One is that Mackie – slated to make her debut in the new series – is actually going to turn up as an early Christmas present, having shot her scenes (including one involving some suspiciously snowy backgrounds) while working on the full series. Another is that Jenna Coleman's Clara Oswald could make a brief return in a companion-lite episode, having filmed an additional piece with Peter Capaldi not long after bowing out.

But here's another option: what if the Doctor Who Christmas episode is actually a crossover with new BBC3 spin-off show Class – or at least a further introduction to one or more of its characters?

Class follows the pupils (and at least one teacher) at Coal Hill School, which has featured in Doctor Who numerous times down the years – from the very first episode, when the Doctor's granddaughter Susan went there, to some 50 years later, when it was the workplace of a certain Miss Oswald. All that timey-wimey business "has caused the very walls of space and time to become thin", so we can expect enough time travel-based shenanigans and alien encounters to make the Doctor lick his lips.

Class launches in the BBC3 section of iPlayer sometime in October and will initially consist of eight episodes, expected to become available weekly. Which means a late October premiere would put the final instalment smack in the middle of December, with just a week or two to go until Christmas Day. A Christmas Doctor Who crossover would therefore follow on very nicely indeed, reintroducing the Doctor after that long hiatus and potentially carrying on the story of the Class kids.

Actually, though, Christmas may not be the first time we see the Doctor in action this year. The initial synopsis for Class promised an appearance from a “legendary figure out of space and time” and when we asked showrunner Patrick Ness whether the Twelfth Doctor might make an appearance, he teased “I can neither yet confirm nor deny... But I’m a big Peter Capaldi fan, let’s put it that way". A source close to the production later went one better, telling us Class “will have a close connection with Doctor Who so don’t be surprised if Peter pops up”.

Basically, there’s going to be a Doctor Who crossover episode of Class, so why not the other way around?
There are plenty of reasons this would make sense from the BBC’s point of view. Doctor Who fans weren’t exactly ecstatic when it was announced that the main show would skip 2016 and they wouldn’t get a new series for a year and half.

And since BBC3 went online and had its budget slashed, new drama has been at an increasing premium – it needs to do well. So we find ourselves in a situation where Doctor Who needs to placate fans and BBC3 needs Class to perform.

What better way to do both than with a bit of cross-pollination.

If Class needs a boost, the huge audience that a Doctor Who Christmas special gets will provide that – remember, the full series of Class should be on iPlayer by then so its target audience of young adults who haven’t yet picked up on it can make it their Boxing Day binge-watch, while Doctor Who fans keen to bridge the gap until the next series will have a show made canonical by its association with the Christmas special (and almost certainly by an appearance from the Doctor).

What’s more, the traditionally broader, less fanboyish, flavour of a Christmas special would be the perfect time to do a crossover with another show – when the series returns for real, fans are going to want pure unadulterated Who.

All in all this seems like a great way to bring together the already converging worlds of Class and Doctor Who, and at the same time would explain why we haven’t had more details of the Christmas special: filming it at least partly within the confines of Coal Hill School would have helped to keep things under wraps – until we’re ready to tear them off in time for Christmas.

I've missed The Doctor this year.

However - maybe it was a good idea to take a season off. Recharge the batteries etc

As in previous years, the BBC's annual charity fundraising evening for Children in Need will feature an item relating to the forthcoming Doctor Who Christmas Special.

This year this will take the form of an exclusive clip from The Return of Doctor Mysterio:

(Credit: BBC)The sneak peak will see the Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi and Nardole, played by Matt Lucas, team up with an investigative reporter played by Charity Wakefield and a masked vigilante played by Justin Chatwin to defend New York from a terrifying alien invasion before the full episode, ‘The Return of Doctor Mysterio’, airs at Christmas.

Written by Steven Moffat, they will be joined by Adetomiwa Edun, Aleksandar Jovanovic and Logan Hoffman.

The exclusive clip will form part of BBC Children in Need’s Appeal Show on Friday 18th November, 7pm, BBC One whilst the 60 minute special will air later in the year at Christmas.

Let's see... judging from that trailer I am going to assume the kid somehow gains the ability to levitate/float which will be the first part of the adventure. Then the Doctor will go to the future where the boy has become a "superhero". Or it could be in reverse meeting the hero first than the boy. But I am guessing they are one and the same.

Could be fun.

The 2017 Christmas special was about the fluffiest and least consequential episode of the revival. It took watching last year's ep with River Song to make me really miss not having a new series this year.

I think I'm looking forward to S10, now that the Doctor and Clara have been sorted out (but that 2016 season finale is still a lot to take in).

Capaldi's Doctor is not an easy one to love, by the viewer or the other characters. But I'll be grateful for more episodes when they do come back.
The new Companion has a lot to live up to in comparison to, say, Donna and Amy. And a lot depends on her relationship to The Doctor, who is currently still a little austere.

The teaser had me, and with any luck Missy will be back (although Missy tormenting Clara will be missed).

C'est vrai qu'il est un peu difficile de trouver les épisodes de Dr WHO des fois. Mais là, je crois que c'est bon, on l'a au complet.

The last Fathom event I attended was the 50th anniversary and that was enough for me. I really don't pay that much attention to the series these days. Perhaps the show will get better with Chris Chibnall. We'll see...

Seems the finale might be the Cyber equivalent of the last two part Dalek fest. All the old Cybermen could be around. The above lot are the RTD era Cybusmen, and the Nightmare in Silver variety have been spotted along with the 70s Revenge versions.
