After many listens I can refute the notion that this is a "Sound design" or "drone" or "ambient" score.
Zimmer has carefully constructed this piece with themes, motifs, ostinato, 'riffs' etc. recurring throughout the film. True, many sounds mimic airplanes, motor boats, ocean waves but that too is carefully placed

Here is a suite I came up with that makes for a satisfying listening experience (24 min app.)
04. Supermarine
03. Shivering Soldier
10. Variation 15 (Dunkirk)
11. End Titles

You can even drop the first two cues since they are incorporated into the excellent " End titles " track

There was a scene in Dunkirk that raised the hairs on the back of my neck - the Spit flying parallel with the coast.

I like the scene where The Phlegm flew parallel to the coats.

ahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a good size collection of Zimmer's scores; mostly 21st century scores but of course Lion King. When listening to Dunkirk, I caught myself a couple of times wondering if I was listening to one of the aforementioned scores. So much of it sounded so similar to his earlier work. I rate this and Junkie XL's Mad Max as purchases I regret.

But that's just my opinion, all respect to others'.

I enjoyed the score both as a listening experiencing in the film. A Bernstein/Goodwin type of war score or a Williams restrained Americana score would not have suited this film. Dunkirk is a film that captures the fear and isolation of the BEF and the score reflects that. Hence why it is not the greatest listening experience for some.

I hadn't thought of the isolation aspect of this story in connection to the score. Makes sense, particularly since you never really see any enemy faces during the film.

Have to revisit the score with this in mind. I may still find it's not one I'll listen to often. But, worth a second look.

It does not inform me. It shows that there are those who are his ardent fans no matter what he produces. After your "sexting teenagers" comment I will no longer respond to anything you write. You disgust me.

Excellent use of the word Wazzock. How'd I miss it? Made muh Chrimbo.

For Americans who are students of WW2, the RAF , the fighter planes they flew and the BOB are mythic.
Modernized Knights of the Roundtable!

I have never seen a film nor a scene that captures this mythic quality like the climax of DUNKIRK.
(and how perfect is the casting of Tom Hardy!?)

The motion picture event of 2017
