I'm not sure if this has been brought up before, but has anyone gone deliberately down the path of collecting blurays of films by their favourite composer(s), regardless of quality of the films?

I thought about this when watching Spasmo, and wondered just how many of Morricone's 450-500 films were even available on bluray. I shocked myself by having fewer than ten - with several more on dvd, but I was particularly thinking about bluray. I don't own so many that it would be especially difficult to rank all the composers involved. In the meantime, any more comments or experience?

Nope. I have on occasion rented or purchased a movie I wasn't otherwise interested in just to hear the score in context, but I don't think I've ever collected for that reason. (I've been a completist for a few directors and screenwriters, but never a composer, actor or cinematographer or anything, I think.) Occasionally I have embarked on a "project" to see every film scored by a composer, but I usually burn out pretty quickly. I started on Goldsmith, tracked down Black Patch, started making my way through his movies, got hung up when The Stripper was only available on VHS and I no longer have a VHS player. Also didn't have time to go through all his TV scores and such.

I also started on Horner, made it through his early Corman days, Deadly Blessing, a few others started filling in the gaps in his filmography, but again I only have so much time to watch movies.

I've bought movies purely for the Goldsmith factor.

As much as I enjoy movies on Bluray -- and I really do, they are a great format, by far superior to DVDs (not to mention VHS) on all counts -- I tend not to buy movies I don't intent do watch a few times (or where I am very interested in the bonus materials).
In fact, since I can stream many movies nowadays in HD quality, I don't feel the need to go out and buy a lot of movies. Just a few select ones.

I bought the Twilight Time Blu-ray of In Like Flint to get the isolated music track (I also like the movie), I left it too late to buy Our Man Flint.

...& I'm very happy to have Congo on Blu-ray.

I'm not sure you can treat buying the JB007 collection on BD as deliberately collecting films (on BD) scored by a particular composer, but I have bought, in the last year the John Barry scored films: The Tamarind Seed, Raise the Titanic and The Legend of the Lone Ranger .. though these were to get the music suites available thereon, the OSTs not being available on CD. Also: The Ipcress File and The Party's Over ... I think Mr. Barry's involvement in Six-Five Special is somewhat limited (he mimes to two of his pop songs).

But I did buy ... and then sell ... the BD of High Road to China (oh, I like the film but the quality is worse than most VHS tapes!) so I suppose this destroys any claim I may make to be collecting JB scored films on BD.

And in second place must be David Arnold but there's no way I would collect his scored films ...

And I don't suppose Johann Strauss II counts (despite his music having been used in numerous films): 5 concerts on BD so far ...

I haven't done that yet, but I DID make it a mission a few years ago to SEE all the films scored by John Williams. And I managed. Even the most obscure of the osbcure. I've seen them all! But the format was obviously variable. From shoddy files hidden in the backstreets of the internet, to being sent stuff by private collectors to buying and renting those I could find in legal format.

I hope I'll be able to pick up all the Williams-scored films (in legit DVD and BluRay format) down the line, when or if I have more money.

Did you get the US or UK edition of High Road To China? I have the US disc and it's pretty good - not from the original negative, sadly, but easily the best it's ever looked. Certainly leagues above VHS!

Hi,

Presumably the UK release - see: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00DJ558OG?keywords=high%20road%20to%20china&qid=1453818448&ref_=sr_1_2&s=dvd&sr=1-2

Amazon shows the Studio name "Mediumrare" ... whoever they are. The picture was okay but certainly nothing like BD should be ... it was the awful sound, muffled especially in the earlier sequences. I know the film has had a troubled release history and I had avoided buying VHS/DVD releases because of the poor reputation. For this BD, again I had read that it was not perfect but was surprised at just how poor it was. Hence I decided to dispose of it and wait perhaps for a new release or a TV broadcast. Last year a Studio (Odeon Entertainment) salvaged and released a good BD of Biggles: Adventures in Time after several lousy DVD releases so perhaps there is hope ...

Medium Rare recently issued BDs of Cannonball Run 1 and 2. The first was okay (though, interestingly, all the Jackie Chan dialogue was subtitled for the first time), the second was out of sync on the 5.1 track (not so bad, but not perfect, on the 2.0 track). (Golden Harvest being an obvious connection between all three films).

It would seem that the US release of High Road To China is a different beast. Still not perfect but better than your description of the UK disc.

One reflection, I thought I should explain for those who don't have a foot in both the film music and footie camps that Arsenal supporters have a reputation for collecting more memorabilia than any others. People joke that they read the match programme instead of watching the action, hence the lack of atmosphere. This was borne out by someone I knew whose home office was a gooner shrine, with shelves full of folders of programmes going back decades.

Anyway....

I think I've decided not to try to collect Morricone-based blurays. I'll pick up the better ones as I come across them but there don't seem to be bargains on ebay any more.
