I was surprised when I did a search on this title only a nice thread in the non-film score discussion board showed up:
http://filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=43932&forumID=7&archive=0

There was a brief request for a score release in that thread but I'd like to repeat it here:

Jeff Alexander, though not a big name remembered today, was a really talented film composer and he wrote one of his best, most energetic, most creative scores for this wonderful film. For me, the film has been a favorite since childhood and the music goes along with that. So many parts are indelible: the madcap and inventive main title (complete with virtuoso jew's harp solos), which effortlessly switches between so many different moods while developing the main theme (and squeezing the love theme in there too). The aggressive strummed guitar and percussion "showdown" cues. The beautiful love theme. There's even some exciting minor-key action variations of the main theme late in the film. It's all so good. It's actually one of my favorite western scores ever, to be honest.

This film (and it's rather disappointing follow-up, Support Your Local Gunfighter, with an inferior score) is being released by Twilight Time later next month. Assuming they were able to find elements for an isolated score track, it would be really great if one of our fantastic specialty labels would consider piggy-backing on that and releasing a separate score release on CD!

Who else is with me?

The film is mentioned dozens of times on the site. Better to type in "FSM" and whatever you're looking for in google. Everyone should know by now that the FSM search engine doesnt work.

Oh, I know it's mentioned lots of times -- because I've mentioned it! But I was talking about a thread dedicated to the score itself.

I tried the Google search too. Some minor film discussion came up several times in the "Non-Film Score Discussion" section, but nothing in the General Discussion section. Unless you can find a thread and link it here?

I agree! Saw the film when it came out, liked both film and its score. Jack Elam is wonderful in it.

Yavar, you might find this interesting. I was in Japan Jan. 1970 while in the Navy. I saw some legit 45 rpm singles to current USA films! Perhaps LPs appeared too? I picked up on United Artists 45 rpm records SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SHERIFF and SAM WHISKEY! They are nicely packaged and look like soundtracks. Two different 3 minute themes on each record. I was only there 4 or 5 days, often wonder what I missed? Odd how Japan would issue (short) soundtracks to USA films that never were issue here!

You can find some in the search link I posted, although nothing dedicated solely to that score. Here's a thread you started 6 years ago. wink

UCLA has some of his tapes, including Dirty Dingus Magee and Day of the Evil Gun. I didnt see SHERIFF.

But that was a mention in a general suggestion thread for the next FSM Western box (which I don't believe even happened). I looked through the threads in the Google search and I didn't see one dedicated to Support Your Local Sheriff specifically.

Sadly, the video links I provided for the score are now long gone, but I highly encourage people to see the wonderfully entertaining film themselves. The thread where I went into further musical detail is this one, though since the YouTube link I supplied is no longer there the timing notes aren't exactly as helpful:

"Found that complete movie online too (it was on in a complete video in widescreen before but that seems to be gone...full screen sections Youtube will have to do) -- anyone who hasn't seen it should give it a chance. It's one of my favorite films, and the cast is just incredible, especially Bruce Dern, Jack Elam, and Walter Brennan, but it's just the best collection of great western character actors in history (and that includes Blazing Saddles):

There's this cool guitar "gunfighter showdown theme" which opens the film but if you want to hear the main theme and how creative the variations on it are go to the following points: 3:13 in the first video is where the main title starts, with the main theme coming in for the first time at 3:51. The love theme comes in at 4:18 briefly, before segueing back to the main title again. It's just so fun, dramatic, wacky, exciting, and humorous all at the same time, and I love it! Laid back version for the hero's introduction at 7:44. Now skip ahead to Part 6 (that is, unless you've never seen the movie in which case you better be watching it all the way through!) At 6:07 there's a lovely developed romantic cue which begins with variations on the main theme and then later moves on to the love theme. Proceed to 5:20 of Part 7 and you'll hear some development of the "gunfighter showdown theme", and another sequence at 6:36, the main theme ingeniously interpolated at 6:55. The punchline to the sequence is at 8:55. 3:26 of Part 8 has some more romantic music followed by a hilarious scene. The cue starting at 7:52 has my favorite dramatic statement of the main theme, though it's brief.

The music for the ending of the film begins at 4:40 of Part 10, and if you're only going to listen to one bit of score I guess that should be it, through the end credits

I've been going on for a little while now so I'll stop but I hope I've convinced just a few people to try the movie out (and there's some more great score in it besides what I mentioned)."

You are probably aware the MGM records issued a soundtrack record to DIRTY DINGUS MAGEE.
Saw the film when it came out, OK I guess. Fun score by Jeff Alexander. I would like to see more CDs of Alexander's music.

Regardless of how many times weve mentioned it, or how many threads its been in, its a great score and defo should be released. So dont rile Swifty Morgan, CD producers, or he will come and shoot ya!
