For the most part it's a really good film that takes chances. Especially the first third. The middle got a bit jokey like any other animated film (sadly). The ending was a bit rushed. The score was wonderful in the film, and an okay listen outside of it. All in all a fine effort and above average movie.
I pretty much agree with this, especially upon first viewing. Repeated viewings uncover some more depth and the humour doesn't impact the story as much.
Music in places is simply amazing however. It's been a while since I've been so aware of the score and how its affect on the narrative is so impactful.

Agreed.
I'm always drawn to scores with structure And harmonic variation. So few composers either are allowed to pursue these avenues or frankly lack the skill to do so. Either way it's nice to see development of three key ideas rather than simple recapitulation of the themes over and over again with no alteration
An excellent movie (certainly one of the best I showed to my kids in the theatre this year) and I hope it wins best animated picture Oscar (if those Disney pics cancelled out each other). Wonderful story, great characters and animation, the score was really good in the movie, less so on disc but still one of the worthy scores of the year.
