In the 1985 sci-fi/horror film LIFEFORCE, Frank Finlay plays the death-obsessed scientist "Dr. Hans Fallada" of the European Space Research Centre in London. Finlay replaced Klaus Kinski in the role. Despite the German origin of his character, Finlay was not allowed to use a German accent for his role because Mathilda May (who played the "Space Girl") had never acted in English before, and was using Finlay's voice as a guide in how to intone in English. While working on this film, Finlay received word that he had been made a CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire). Tobe Hooper directed the film. Henry Mancini's score was most recently released by BSX in 2006.

Finlay returned to the role of "Porthos" in 1989's THE RETURN OF THE MUSKETEERS. Richard Lester again directed, and Jean-Claude Petit's score was released on a Milan CD. Although released theatrically in Europe, a U.S. theatrical release never happened, and the film finally made its American premiere on the USA cable network on April 3, 1991.

Robert Duvall starred in the 1992 television movie STALIN, which the late Vilmos Zsigmond shot for director Ivan Passer. Frank Finlay played "Sergei." The film was shot in Russia, and shooting even took place in Moscow at the Kremlin itself. Locations in Hungary, particularly in Budapest, were also used. Stanislas Syrewicz composed the unreleased score.

In Roman Polanski's 2002 film THE PIANIST, Finlay played the elderly father of Wladyslaw Szpilman (Adrian Brody), a Polish Jew. When the Nazis invade Warsaw, the father is beaten by a German soldier for daring to use the sidewalk. The film's score was almost entirely classical music, with Wojciech Kilar providing some incidental original score.

Sherlock Holmes (Christopher Plummer) was after Jack the Ripper again in the 1979 mystery MURDER BY DECREE. And Frank Finlay was again playing Scotland Yard's Inspector Lestrade. Bob Clark (A CHRISTMAS STORY) was the director of this yarn. Paul Zaza and Carl Zittrer are credited with the unreleased score. Finally got to see this as part of a double bill with The Elephant Man, so a great afternoon in the cinema there. Very interesting that though there's no real production connection between the two films, Finlay plays the same part in two films with the same subject matter!

Finlay co-starred with Louis Jourdan in a 1977 television adaptation of COUNT DRACULA. Finlay played Dracula's nemesis Abraham van Helsing. Philip Saville directed the film, which was scored by Kenyon Emrys-Roberts. The film aired on PBS in the U.S. That's the one. Great drama. Still have a vhs recording of the repeat on BBC 1 somewhere..

First director of Doctor Who way back in 1963. His second story, the epic Marco Polo, is a much desired lost classic.
