THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 4

20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA---director Bryan Singer confirmed he and 20th Century Fox are developing a movie based on the classic Jules Verne novel, "I’m incredibly excited to be working with my friends at Fox, with whom I’ve had such a long and fruitful relationship. Ever since I was a boy and first discovered the 1870 Jules Verne novel, I have dreamt of retelling this classic story. Without revealing too much, it contains not only the original characters of Captain Nemo, Ned Land and Professor Aronnax, but also some new and original characters and Sci Fi plot twists culminating in a timeless adventure for all ages.”
The 1954 Walt Disney Productions movie starred Kirk Douglas and James Mason.

LOGAN LUCKY---Steven Soderburgh has come out of retirement to direct this heist movie starring Matt Damon and Channing Tatum. No other plot details were released.

OJ---Martin Sheen and private detective William Dear are developing a miniseries based on Dear's book OJ IS INNOCENT AND I CAN PROVE IT: THE SHOCKING TRUTH ABOUT THE MURDERS OF NICOLE BROWN SIMPSON AND RON GOLDMAN. Dear said he has the murder weapon and other evidence that will exonerate Simpson, "I've worked hard to be able to put forth what I think would be sufficient evidence before a grand jury to seek an indictment of the person who should have been considered a major suspect at the time."
In a related story, Dr. Bennet Omalu, who was portrayed in the Will Smith movie CONCUSSION, said Simpson suffers from CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), “I went through the O.J. saga, his story, and his irrationality, his impulsivity, his disinhibition, by disinhibition meaning you’re beginning to lose your learned behavior, his sexual improprieties, his violent tendencies, domestic violence history — in fact, almost bordering on irrationality, irrational behaviors."
He added, “Even after he was acquitted in the murder trial, he still went on — you know, he’s in jail today because of some stupidity. After 2002, I’ve always suspected that O.J. Simpson is a victim of this disease. He’s a victim too.”

BIG BANG THEORY---Adam West (BATMAN) will guest star on the 200th episode which airs on February 25.

MANHATTAN---WGN America cancelled the series.

LEWIS & CLARKE---the long-gestating HBO miniseries is underway again with the script being written by Michelle Ashford (MASTERS OF SEX). Casey Affleck stars. Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt and Edward Norton are co-producers.

OFFICE UPRISING---horror movie underway set in the world's leading arms manufacturer where the employees are unknowingly given a substance that should increase their efficiency. Unfortunately, the wrong substance is used which turns the employees into murderous zombies instead. The incompetent employee and a group of unaffected co-workers must find a way to survive the zombie uprising. Brenton Thwaites (OCULUS) stars.

RALLY CAR---Keanu Reeves stars in this movie as an ex-NASCAR champion driver who teams up with a Chinese girl to participate in a road rally race across China. Harald Zwart (THE KARATE KID remake) is the director.

WOMAN WALKS AHEAD---Jessica Chastain (ZERO DARK THIRTY) stars in this movie about a 19th century New York activist who helped Sitting Bull protect the Sioux from the US government.

INCORPORATED---new Syfy series set in the future where corporations have unlimited power. A young executive infiltrates the corporate world to save the woman he loves. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are co-producers.

SIX---Barry Sloane (LONGMIRE) stars in this History series as the leader of a SEAL Team Six squad assigned to take out a Taliban leader and discover he's being helped by an American.

SUPERGIRL---The Flash will make a crossover appear on the March 28 episode.

KICKBOXER: RETALIATION---Hafthor Julius Bjornsson (GAME OF THRONES) will play the villain in the reboot sequel with Alain Moussi and Jean-Claude Van Damme returning.

A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC---miniseries underway based on the novel about four parallel worlds. Gerard Butler is co-producer.

THE THREE LITTLE STOOGES---movie underway about Larry, Moe and Curly when they were children. Harris Goldberg (DEUCE BIGALOW: MALE GIGOLO) is the writer/director.

DC'S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW---the CW hinted that superheroes in the series include Sgt. Rock, Hourman, Sandman and Ma Hunkle.

Usually I am not for these remakes, but I hold out a slight hope of 20,000 Leagues being done correctly if Singer did dearly love the book. The Disney version is one of my favorites, it remains remarkably good and effective.

How is that any different from today?

20,000 Leagues? OK, Fox, now let's do a remake of JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH.

I share your hope for a cracker of a movie adaption of this but with Singer at the helm the chances of that, sadly, are pretty remote.

I know you are probably right, but it is just a dream

I loved his early directorial works, but he has increasingly lost his way. So I believe he could do an excellent job, but not optimistic.

I may be verbally beaten for some of what I am about to say, but he has made some pretty good movies, like Apt Pupil, The Usual Suspects and I will even defend his Superman Returns as a lot more affectionately Superman than this MOS stuff. I know he sorta lost his way with Xmen bigger and better or whatever...

Translation:
My cohorts and I are so delusional that we think we can improve upon a classic story.
We will fail spectacularly--but in doing so, we will get richer from your money.

The kraken fight is the most boring piece of the film. They should have held out on the mystery longer. I'm very confident the new one will be a CGI colourles run of the mill non-event. Oh and Nemo will now be black, Kirk Douglas role will either be a reactionary bonehead baddy OR a heroic longhaired latina wearing a white sleeveless undershirt the entire film, the scientist a super empathic female and Peter Lorre's role will now go to a precocious wise cracking Asian. The natives will now speak perfect English and tell how they already have been ravished by the eeeeeeevil white man before. Soundtrack consisting of continuous droning and romantic scenes, oh there shall be romantic scenes, get that piss awful indie hipster junk with the lead singer sounding like their gens are stuck in vice. Oh and ironic whistling and ukulele.

D.S.

If it's Singer, you know the outfits will be fabulous.

Nobody ever gets Jules Verne right, though Karel Zeman came close.

I wish they'd film other Jules Verne novels. ROBUR THE CONQUEROR was a sequel Verne wrote to MASTER OF THE WORLD, and has all kinds of adventurous spectacle, including a machine that can ride on land, sea, and air, as well as a genius-villain, who rivals any of Verne's other characters.

Sadly, however, I agree with sentiments expressed above. Not to mention Hollywood's propensity for continually remaking what has gone before, and before, and before. I mean, how many versions have we seen of 20,000 LEAGUES already? There's the Disney, and at least 2 TV miniseries, not to mention various spinoffs.

Verne wrote dozens of novels, many of which would make great films.

Oh well.

Eat Superman (1978). Chew it up. Swallow. Shove your entire hand down your throat. Hurl with explosive velocity and without regard for those around you.

There. You have Superman Returns.

Now that I think about it some things are just to iconic to do over. For me Universal's Frankenstein monster IS the monster. Disney's 20,000 Leagues Nautilus IS the Nautilus. Nothing else feels legitimate.
