Dear Lou --

Haven't visited this thread for a while, bumped into it just now, suddenly realized for the first time that this album is yours. Before, I aways thought you and I were discussing the decisions of a third party. And now I see you've released quite a few discs. More power to you! Maybe I'll check out one of the spaghetti western CD's.

And speaking of westerns: Was that a joke, or did ALFREDO GARCIA use "I'll Remember April"? As you may or may not know, it happens that the song WAS written for a western movie of sorts: Abbott and Costello's RIDE 'EM COWBOY. (Hans J. Salter told me that the song was practically the only hit Universal had in one of its pictures in those days, and for many years whenever a scene called for a pop source music cue they'd trot out "I'll Remember April." In fact, I remember John Williams using it more than once when he was scoring TV's "Alcoa Premiere" in the early 60's.)

-- Preston

PS: Those Gregg Nestor albums Ray recommends are of course exactly the ones I was referring to.

Hi Preston

That's funny...can happen easily with these posts sometimes...

No joke, "I'll Remember April" was played just a little bit by Warren Oates in Alfredo Garcia, in an early scene for Gig Young and his partner. I was being a little cute, as I never planned on using it, but I did forget it was written for "Ride 'em Cowboy" - thanks for reminding me!

As a matter of fact, Preston, I believe "April" was written for KEEP 'EM FLYING but was dropped from the music roster and then put into RIDE 'EM COWBOY. Carol Bruce was supposed to sing "I'll Remember April". I think Dick Foran does a wonderful job with it in COWBOY. Bruce and Martha Raye recorded two songs that were issued on studio promo discs for KEEP 'EM FLYING and Ella Fitzgerald recorded "Cow Cow Boogie" for RIDE 'EM COWBOY, also issued on studio promo discs and distributed to radio stations.

Lou Pecci - "Cinema Standards on Guitar" CD review - Vintage Guitar Magazine

"These ’60s-style guitar instrumentals are truly old school, à la studio men Billy Strange or Vic Flick. Lou plays duets of “Over The Rainbow,” “It’s Only A Paper Moon,” and “Caravan” with nary a trace of irony – indeed, the music is a time warp back to an era when a guitarist could cut an LP of standards and sell many a copy. In 2016, Pecci’s authentic covers sound sweet and refreshing." – Pete Prown, Vintage Guitar Magazine, August 2016 issue

Mazeltov on the praise, Lou! Well deserved, I have no doubt.

Once again, this thread has dropped below my radar for quite a while, until tonight. Thanks for all the additional background info, Ray. You and Manderley never cease to amaze me. Incidentally, I quite agree with you about Foran's vocal. I'm also very partial to another cowboy ballad he crooned in those days, "My Little Buccaroo," easily the equal of Bing's version. Did Foran introduce it in a WB short? Of course, if anybody knows, it'll be you.
