WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10

THE INVISIBLE MAN---Johnny Depp will star in the Universal Pictures reboot based on the HG Wells novel. Claude Rains starred in the original 1933 movie. Earlier, Universal announced that Tom Cruise will star in THE MUMMY reboot movie.

STAR TREK---Bryan Fuller (STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE and VOYAGER, HANNIBAL) is the showrunner for the CBS All Access series. Fuller said, "It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand-new iteration of Star Trek with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no Star Trek series has gone before." The new series will have a new, original mythology with new characters and civilizations.

FAST 8---Charlize Theron is in talks to play the villain in the sequel.

DEADPOOL---the sequel is underway at 20th Century Fox with writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick returning to write the script.

ROCKY---Sylvester Stallone commented on returning for a sequel to CREED, “I really have mixed feelings about this, seriously. I feel like Rocky, at the end of this movie on the steps, with the help of a young man, and he looks out and says, ‘From here, you can see your whole life’ — it sort of summarizes the whole thing. I don’t know how much further you can push Rocky.”

THE EMPTY MAN---20th Century Fox movie underway based on the post-apocalyptic comic book about the FBI and CDC teaming up to combat a deadly plague known as the Empty Man Disease.

THE ICE TWINS---movie underway based on the thriller novel about a mother and her young daughter, Kirstie, who are stranded on a small Scottish island during a storm. But Kirstie claims she's Lydia, her twin sister who died in an accident.

RIVERDALE---CW pilot underway based on the Archie comics. The "subversive" series stars Lili Reinhart as Betty and Cole Sprouse as Jughead.

THE WHITE PRINCESS---Starz miniseries sequel to THE WHITE QUEEN is underway. The sequel miniseries will focus on England's War of the Roses from the women's perspective.

THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO---Amazon ordered four 13-episode seasons of the series that will air on Prime Video in 2016.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE---movie underway about Iraq war veterans having problems adjusting to civilian life due to PTSD. Miles Teller, Haley Bennett and Amy Schumer star.

Okay, this new Trek can bodly go without me. I think I'm nearly done with any new Trek.

See, that's just it. It's NOT Trek. It's some hack's version of the concept with the name slapped on it.

In spite of how hacky Roddenberry, himself, got from time to time, he still had an instinct for coming up with a decent yarn. And he was canny enough to surround himself with great collaborators when there was slack to be picked up.

If these current cretins had the storytelling chops to come up with anything original (or at least recycle old ideas in a halfway interesting way to at least make it SEEM fresh), then there could still be some life left in the beast. But there's been no evidence of that so far.

I think I'd love to be proven wrong, though.

Johnny Depp goes from pasty face to no face! Actually I could see him in this kinda film and it could be good.

I guess this just doesn't matter to me. I understand that there will never be 60s Star Trek again. If I like this show I'll watch it. If not I'll otherwise occupy my time. I don't care if it calls itself Star Trek or not.

I hope they use the Matrix-style 360 degree effect on him. It'll be like he's really not there!

THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO---Amazon ordered four 13-episode seasons of the series that will air on Prime Video in 2016.

These are the same episodes that have been airing (the first 26)/will be airing (the next 26) on UK TV.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE---movie underway about Iraq war veterans having problems adjusting to civilian life due to PTSD. Miles Teller, Haley Bennett and Amy Schumer star.

Amy Schumer's doing dramatic stuff already?

That's an entirely reasonable point of view.
But if the new show is going to be about a "new, original mythology", then calling it Trek is silly.
The suits are hoping that the average watcher will connect with it based on the name and, therefore, have a built-in audience.

Anyway, it seems every new Trek series since TNG has made the same boast over and over again.
I think it held up for TNG, but the rest... not so much.

Absolutely the most depressed (and depressive) human beings on Earth occupy this Board. The negativity is palpable and it makes me sad.

Bryan Fuller has come up with some of the most original work on television in decades (Wonderfalls, Dead Like Me) and he LOVES Trek. I think he, more than anyone else, will be capable of bringing the kind of science fiction and philosophy that the original Trek is known for.

I understand what you're saying and I feel for you. I really do.
But what Fuller is saying is the exact same line we've heard from every other new Trek custodian.
So you'll forgive the scepticism.

I'll judge the results, not the intentions.
(Perhaps you missed the part in my post where I said I'd love to be proven wrong.)

Government agencies working together?!? What a crock of shit! There's only so much disbelief a person can suspend!

Oh, and anyone who grew up during the 1980s must certainly be afflicted with "Empty Man Disease." big grin

I'd like to see new adventures of the starship Enterprise that have a positive spirit and a hopefulness for the future. A Star Trek that makes you glad to be alive in a future that you want to make happen. But I fear that all we will get are more deconstructed characters, miserably depressing stories about suffering, and relentless, noisy, cataclysmic action. Why should we expect anything different after the last Star Trek movies and programs?

Will Jughead be asexual, as he is in the comics?

Perhaps if the Invisible Man was a Tim Burton film we'd have a new instant classic Danny Elfman soundtrack on our hands..

I didn't know the Archie's were elves.

And the fact Alex Kurtzman is attached isn't exactly a seal of quality!
