I've never seen the show, but I love Bear McCreary's work and I take a listen to the samples of each soundtrack. With things being 25 percent off, I had to take the chance. What are your guys' stand out tracks on these two albums?

I decided to add Broke Sky and Dave to the orders as well just because why not take advantage of the sale? I haven't gone on a soundtrack binge in a while.

For me Season 1 is the weakest of the seasons.
Apaprently the makers didn't want themes/melodies/etc and wanted a more percussion heavy approach, which for the most part they get here.

However, Bear still manages to introduce themes which will go on to be developed throughout the series.

Highlights for me from Season 1 would be

08 Two Funereals
24 Passacaglia
27 The Shape Of Things To Come

Season 2 is possibly my favourite soundtrack of the entire show with almost every track a standout track.

Real highlights for me would be
08 Pegasus
10 Something Dark Is Coming (8:54)
13 Roslin and Adama
15 Dark Unions
17 Prelude to War (8:25)
18 Reuniting the Fleet
with most of the other tracks not far behind.

If you like Bear McCreary's BSG style, you should really get seasons 2-4 at least

I'd like to add "Colonial Anthem" from season 2

Purely for hearing the old "Battlestar Galactica" theme in the new series.

The powers-that-be on the show wanted the music to be very background at the outset, but over time (and as Bear demonstrated his copious talents) it became apparent that music was a very powerful tool, and by the end of the series you have entire episodes built around the music.

Somewhere late in Season 1 is when this change started happening, so the finale of the Season 1 disc is actually quite interesting. The Season 2 disc is a great record from front to back, though, and really well-programmed. Season 2 is my favorite of the BSG albums.

I noticed album sounding softer than all the others if that makes sense, but I wanted to go in order. If I really like these I'll probably pick up the others.

If you like these two, you will like the next two. I think the musical journey from the washes of sound in the mini-series to the highly thematic finale is well worthwhile.

They were overcoming their time on st-tng. Plus st-tos like bsg-tos had strong music affecting attitudes in their TV sequals/reboots.

I found I needed to make a personal playlist for each soundtrack. There were a lot of outstanding stuff, but a lot didn't work for me on CD. I also reorganized the music by episodes.

Season one is good, maybe 4 outta 5 stars (many of the cues are excellent). The remaining seasons are all excellent.

Don't forget you can check out some samples on Youtube so you have an idea what you'd be getting.

On the other hand, if you honestly love his work, just buy them. I'm a huge fan of his work, and own at least 75% of what he's put out on CD, and he hasn't let me down yet. And BSG is what got me addicted to his work.

Season 1 & 2 are strong and stronger albums, respectively. Season 3 is the strongest to me, so that even if Season 4 isn't as strong to me, all of McCreary's BSG material is the the best thing I heard all through the 00's

Just buy it all, but don't skip season 3 even if you don't get the complete run.

Season 4 is my favorite album, if only because it has the amazing finale score on it.

I'm surprised that some seem to be dismissive of season 4, which has some amazing highlights on it (even besides the finale). I'm thinking…

Gaeta's Lament
Resurrection Hub
The Cult of Baltar
Laura Runs
Elegy
Dreilide Thrace Sonata No. 1
Diaspora Oratorio

I think these are among the best cues of the whole series. To me, all these scores are some of the strongest film scoring in recent memory. A bold statement, I know, but I believe it.

I really enjoy S4 especially after listening to the soundtracks for 1-3 with the way the themes develop over the series. Season 2 may we'll be my favourite release, but that's not to say there's anything wrong with 3 or 4. Especially with the full score for the final episode which is just magnificent.

Seasons 2, 3, and 4 are excellent. It is hard to pick a "best" among them. Schiffy, I think that season 4 is a bit more 'experimental' than the earlier seasons, so it sounds a bit different, but it's fantastic. Honestly, my favorite is the second disk of season 4; it is like a capstone of the best of the whole series.

I have a short playlist that I never, ever tire of:

- Prologue
- Main Title Year 2
- Wander My Friends
- Prelude to War
- Admiral and Commander
- Passacaglia
- Colonial Anthem

While watching the series I thought season 4 had perhaps the best music. But for some reason when I listened to the music apart from their episodes it didn't resonate with me. Season 2 remains my favorite.

I am in no way dismissing Season 4. But if anyone was not going to buy the entire BSG collection for some reason, I'm just suggesting that I enjoyed the S.3 album the most.

in the Season 2 episode where Starbuck is visiting her old apartment they use a Philip Glass piece Metamorphosis One from his album Solo Piano as an album her father owned (or was he supposed to be the pianist or composer?). Does anyone know if any of the other music in the series is Glass? A lot of times the music is Glassish, and a few times it sounds like McCreary is copying a Glass temp track. A battle scene in season 2 (a Pegasus episode) sounds right out of Mishima. Sometimes I can't tell if it's Glass or not.
Anyway, after wavering for a decade, I broke down and ordered the CDs for the pilot & seasons 1-4 & Razor/The Plan. Rewatching the series on blu-ray I finally feel that the music tracks I really like outweigh the ones I don't.
I think Caprica has the series' best music of all. Apart from the pilot episode CD, did they ever release a series CD, or is it just OOP? PS, the French blu-ray of Caprica has like 7 hours of soundtrack music!...but it feels a little too fragmentary. I'm hoping the CD would be a better listen.

an edit to my last post: I found out that it is later revealed that Starbuck's dad is supposed to be the pianist, but is he also supposed to be the composer of the music heard?
