LOST IN SPACE
Composed and Conducted by BRUCE BROUGHTON
INTRADA Special Collection Vol. 340

With the latest release from their long-standing relationship with composer Bruce Broughton, Intrada revisits Broughton's massive score to the 1998 film version of Lost in Space. Broughton had two-and-a-half weeks to score the film and that it’s one of the richest, grandest scaled and most thematically compelling scores of his career is a testament to Broughton’s professionalism and talent. Not only scored on a tight schedule, but the picture underwent numerous changes even as Broughton was attempting to finalize his score and record it with the Sinfonia of London. The composer had to write and record in haste and revise and re-score numerous sequences right up until the last minute. The resulting score is remarkably coherent, strongly melodic in its thematic elements, powerful in its majestic moments, and ferocious in its action sequences.

This new release expands upon the previous release, and now covers 2-CDs, including many alternates and revisions. Intrada revisited the complete session masters, recorded digitally during February and March 1998. The assembly follows Broughton’s initial plan, with full cues playing in their originally intended sequence, including a significant highlight -- the almost completely unused action set piece "Major Mayhem" that follows the main title.

The film retains the narrative of the original Irwin Allen TV from the '60s on which the movie is based. A space family Robinson sets out to colonize Alpha Centauri, only to lift off with a saboteur trapped on board. The ship is sent off course and is lost in space as the Robinsons deal with deadly space spiders, time bubbles and exploding planets, only to come out without any idea where they are or how to get home.

This is probably my favorite Bruce Broughton score -- or at least, it's right up there with YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES. This new release is simply magnificent!

I enjoy this score quite a bit, but at the same time, feel like the previous release was rather comprehensive. I wonder if the alternates are drastically different? Surprised nobody else has chimed in on this one.

One of my favorite Broughton scores. Looks I'll be triple dipping this one whenever I have the opportunity to.

Didn't somebody suggest recently that Don Davis ghost-wrote a couple of cues?

Somehow I keep missing this score. I'll check out the sound samples. Pretty cool getting Rescuers Down Under and now Lost In Space within weeks of one another.

Isn't this announcement like eight hours early? Not that I'm complaining.

That was me. Please disregard my ignorant statement partly inspired by Wikipedia.

One of Broughton's best (amazes me than in EIGHTEEN YEARS, he has never worked on another theatrical release movie frown), yet the previous Intrada CD was more than generous, and I rarely listen to alternates, so I'll give this one a pass.

Dutifully ignored :-)

Ditto here. Truly wish for those who want this to enjoy it. It is a terrific score I grant you. But I have found that I almost never listen to alternate cues. In fact I've stopped buying extended versions of previously released score that I own.

Same as with "Executive decision": I really like the film (I am the only one) but fear that the music can't match that. I am very tempted nonetheless.

I also thought that the last release was pretty comprehensive.

But I am also very excited by this release and will be picking it soon. While I have found that the LIS movie has not held up well with time, this score is one of my favourites. I look forward to hearing the alternate cues as well.

At first I wondered if this would be worth a purchase as the original Intrada is such a good album - even a bit long (because so much of the music is a workout), though I love every minute. And I'm also not much for alternates by and large.

But Broughton is such a fine and inventive composer that I just can't resist hearing more of what he did here for one of my favorite of his scores. Plus I tend to see these purchases as votes of support for what Intrada is doing - and this one gets two discs up!

I wasn't to familiar with the OST. I think I had it, but didn't spin it much. Most have sold it off second hand, because I don't have it now.

Revisiting the score it's quite adventurous. I hear a lot of "Williams" and "Goldsmith" in it. Funny it doesn't sound like a Sci Fi score to me. Why would Star Wars (also an adventure score) remind me of robots and space battles but not this one? That's just an observation.

I'm not familiar with the film either, so for me the music sounds like a "Raiders" score, and in that respect works quite well on a musical level.

Just noticed a problem with one of the two covers for this release on Intrada's website. There's a rectangle around the title logo inside of which the blue-blackness of space is a lighter shade than anywhere else. Looks to be a photoshop hiccup of some kind.

Thankfully, this "defect" is nowhere to be seen on the physical product, but I still thought I'd ask -- What do you think is the most appropriate way to get in touch with Intrada or Designwell in order to get a "fixed" version of this beautiful artwork?

I'd scan my own copy of the liners, but even if I had the equipment and the know how to make a good high-res image, I'd be afraid I'd damage the cover (got a signed copy from Creature Features, you see). Any suggestions?

My suggestion would be to remove the discs from the jewel case, place them into your CD player and press play.

I finally picked this up during Intrada's latest sale and noticed the same box around the title when I was ripping the score to my network drive. I wouldn't really call it a Photoshop hiccup so much as something that doesn't really show once the booklet has been printed. I think if you scanned an actual booklet you'd still be able to see that box.

What I did was just save the cover off Intrada's site and adjust to contrast levels of the image to darken the blacks until I couldn't see the box anymore.

Fantastic release by the way. Possibly my favorite CD of the ones I grabbed during the sale.

I finally picked up this complete set from Intrada as this is hands down one of my favorite Broughton scores. This film has an interesting album history as it was original released as a song/score compilation, then followed by the 77min Intrada score only release (an instant buy from me back in '99), and now finally this "complete" 2cd release which is interestingly programed as "the score the way Broughton intended," and not the actually "score as heard in film."

I thought this 2 disc along with all the alternates would actually comprise either all the music on the 1999 edition, as well as the score as heard in the film, but it's not entirely the case. The 1999 Intrada disc for example still has my personal favorite assembly of the epic "spiders attack" cue, labeled simply as "spiders." Notably, this version is not on the 2 disc.

So heads up: grab that 1999 release if you don't have it and a fan of this score and only own the 2 disc. It's currently only $3.99 on Intrada's site and is a really solid program with variations not on the "complete" 2 disc edition.

Two remaining thoughts:

1: how on earth did Broughton write all this music including the variations in three weeks? The sheer amount of notes especially in the action writing is a Goldsmithian feat.

2: Anyone have any more backstory on the 1999 assembly? If the 2 disc is the score as Broughton originally wrote it (before all the re-edits)... is the 77min assembly closer to the score in the film? Or a separate more curated album presentation in itself?

Apologies if this has already been discussed elsewhere as I couldn't find it. Either way, fantastic score. Kudos to Intrada team for 2 really stellar but notably different presentations of this score.

But is there any actual new music or even a different take there? I mean, it continues to boggle me why people are so obsessed with having the SAME recording more than once just because a few things might be shuffled around.

THis is one of my favorite scores and Brughton truly made the film more exciting that it would have been otherwise. Especially the final "trip through the planet" finale (which was thrilling)

and not the actually "score as heard in film."

It was pretty well hacked up in a few spots, such as the opening dogfight. You'll just have to piece that one together yourself.

The only cue I miss that seems to be truly missing, is from the scene where John puts his dogtags on Will when he's sleeping. It's a different version than on album. Unless it was just mixed differently or I keep missing it...
