Elfman is scoring the James Ponsoldt (The End of the Tour) thriller starring Tom Hanks and Emma Watson.

Good news, I was already quite looking forward to this on the strength of the cast (Karen Gillan, John Boyega and Bill Paxton are also high up the cast list.)

Only three weeks left until the movie is supposed to be released and still no info regarding the soundtrack album??

Nothing for the score and nothing really for the movie either. Seems like it's being dumped.

Something will happen. It's Elfman. There not being a soundtrack is unthinkable.

Score will be released next Friday. I'm assuming it's a download only.

I'm loving this! Almost entirely electronic, lots of quirky sounds, no big themes but some catchy motifs. It reminds me of Rob Simonsen's Nerve score in places. It won't be to everyone's tastes and would wear thin over an extended period, but with just 36 minutes of score it's a refreshing little oddity.

Maybe the score is good, the trailer sure convinced me to steer clear of the film. Despite a good cast, it looks life a riff off lots of other films that already covered this material. The reviews out now already confirm this is not a good movie.

Well you completely won me over with that comparison!!!

I've had it on all morning too. I like it a lot, but I'm not sure it will break into my Elfman top ten or anything.

More and more, this score makes it clear what a milestone THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN really was for him in terms of how his sound is changing. Both FIFTY SHADES DARKER and this feel like they're playing with sounds he first started using there.

THE CIRCLE is probably more like TRAIN than DARKER in that it appears to largely be comprised of synths and samples with only certain cues using a fuller orchestra. I'm all for that: I loved the sleek, unique, trippy sound of TRAIN and I am generally liking the overall sound of this score too.

The thing that surprised me about THE CIRCLE is how chipper many of the early cues on the album are... I don't think Elfman was deliberately aping Daniel Pemberton's score to STEVE JOBS or anything, but the synths he selected are a bit similar. Aspects of the synths in the early cues made me think of the WALL-E and HEARTBEEPS as well, of all things! It's like those two scores had a threesome with THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN and the result is this one.

But all that said, there's no real theme to speak of... Mostly just a lot of interesting texture. That's a totally legit way to approach a movie like this, of course, but the scores he does that do the "theme and variation" thing a bit more prominently - THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN being one of them - generally stay in my rotation a little longer.

Elfman wrote 'The Circle' before 'The Girl on the Train'. Some moments are quite similar to 'The End of the Tour' too, but it overall sounds like a new direction for Elfman to me. I'm enjoying his odd little thriller phase.

Oh did he? That's interesting. I think those two scores affected him positively. The 2nd FIFTY SHADES score (written after both THE CIRCLE and GOTT, right?) was a little better than the 1st one.

Can't wait to hear this. Some of the replies above sound promising to me (like the comparison to NERVE, which was my favourite score last year). I've been longing for a new, all-electronic score by Elfman. Last one was WISDOM, and that's been unique in Elfman's oeuvre for decades now.

I was totally surprised by the score to Steve Jobs which I thought to be one of the absolute best of that year. This certainly feels like that lite, without some of the more whimsical diversions into classical and other things that makes that such an amazing album. So perhaps a backhanded compliment to say this is only a shadow of that but it's still very good and a most enjoyable shadow. Am liking this quite a bit more than Girl on the Train and some other recent, more modern Elfman efforts.

It's on Spotify.
I played the first few tracks last night.
It's deeply dippy, Wreck It Ralph smile
