Don Terryl Plumeri, 71, was found murdered inside his Dunnellon rental home Friday

DUNNELLON, Fla - The murder of a 71-year-old composer/musician may be linked to a rash of burglaries in the county, Citrus County deputies say.

The body of Don "Terry" Plumeri was found inside his residence at 6662 W. Candier Court in Dunnellon on Friday following a welfare check.

According to deputies, Plumeri suffered extensive upper body trauma.

"This homicide was brutal, it was vicious," said Sheriff Jeff Dawsy.

At his rental home, deputies noted there was forced entry into the rural home and it had been ransacked.

"He was a loner," said Paul Vollmer, Plumeri's neighbor. "I knew something was wrong when he didn't put his garbage out on Friday."

Plumeri's work was featured in more than 50 Hollywood films. He is a gold and platinum recording artist and most recently released a DVD of his work with the Moscow Philharmonic in 2012.

You can view his cello work by clicking here .

Deputies say the scene had similarities to 12 other burglaries in the county.

Those burglaries started in mid-January and happened during daytime hours, deputies explained. Deputies believe Plumeri was killed during the day Thursday.

"We don't think this is someone lurking in the shadows at night," Sheriff Dawsy added.

Most of the homes were in rural areas, were forced into and guns, jewelry and cash were stolen.

Sheriff Dawsy is urging residents to keep their doors locked all day and to set alarms if they have them.

"I feel violated. It's like we are in a prison," Vollmer explained.

If you have any information regarding these incidents, you can remain anonymous and be eligible for up to a $3,000 reward by calling Crime Stoppers of Citrus County at 1-888-ANY-TIPS.

The Sheriff is urging residents to follow some of these home safety tips:

Make it appear as though someone is home in the daytime and nighttime hours.
Park a car in the driveway, not in the garage--but make sure both are locked.
Leave a radio or TV on inside.
Leave on interior fans or lamps, i.e., leave on a bathroom light.
Make sure newspapers and mail are collected daily.
Make sure all windows and doors are locked.
Leave outside lights on at night.
Don't open the door to anyone you don't recognize.
Don't open the door to any door-to-door sales people or otherwise without calling the Sheriff's Office.
Call 911 if anyone knocks on your door and asks for someone who lives there who DOESN'T live there.
Report any suspicious activity immediately by calling 911.

That's... That's horrible. I always thought he was a great untapped resource. Love his score to MR. ATLAS. So sorry to hear this and great condolences for his family.

Jeesh. You never expect to hear things like this about members of our little "community".

What a terrible travesty.

I bought Raging Angels as a blind buy, simply b/c it looked like such an unusual release, and it's become a real listening gem for me. I hope he realized that people enjoyed his music.

RIP, Mr. Plumeri

Spending time with Scarecrows. Shame the Intrada release is long gone, but I may just have to track it down soon...

Horrible news indeed, and as Schweiger said in another thread, not the first time it happens to a film composer, re Doug Timm in 1989.

I e-mailed with Plumeri in 2009, mostly about his contribution to the 1991 film One False Move. I have also seen Sometimes They Come Back, also from 91.

RIP Terry Plumeri.

I've posted a memorial tribute to Terry Plumeri on my Musique Fantastique page - with an as-yet-unpublished segment from the book series about Terry's work in horror films, incorporating an interview with him. Also includes a link to an archive of the complete 2009 interview
.
R.I.P. to a gentleman and a first-rate composer.

Beautiful person with great heart, lot of understanding and also big musical talent.
He even listen to some of my crazy compositions.
Terry was planning to compose piano concerto...but it will never happen and what a great music it would be.
I really miss you Terry.
