As I told James, so great to see Elmer looking so young and vibrant and how special to see the Classy Maestro Alfred Newman and Ken Darby! Love what Ken says about Alfred Newman.
And Newman's wave of the hand in (humble) dismissal, when Ken Darby's acceptance speech was how working with Newman was a greater honor than winning the Oscar.
Newman was famous for self-effacing humility, was quoted as saying he was no better than "a plumber."
Sad in the respect the hugely talented Alfred Newman was nearing the end of his life and no one has replaced him! Newman may have been short in height but was a giant in musical talent!
That was just a wonderful little clip. Elmer certainly deserved MORE Oscars, especially for something as groundbreaking and genre-defining as THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, (and on and on), but it was just great to see him on stage, even for for a film that is now not really remembered. It was also great to see the GREAT Alfred Newman.
And hey, remember those days when Oscar winners kept their "thank yous" short and sweet and didn't have to be urged off stage by the orchestral prompts?
That was a wonderful clip. Thank you so much. It almost made me want to watch the Oscars again.
In the topic of Elmer and the Newman family at the Oscars, I pretty much think nothing beat this. It even includes John Williams with a kind of WTF face, which makes me think that he probably just saw it all.
It's cool as hell to think that Elmer was the Marc Shaiman of the 1970s Oscars
