In recent months I've been writing a blog analyzing film music and putting scenes to music cues as heard in the official CDs. In other words, I'm doing my best to walk in the masterful footsteps of Jeff Bond, Mike Matessino, Doug Adams, etc...it's been extremely fun and self-educational!

In any case, here a link to my most recent post on The Force Awakens. I liked the score a good deal more than the film itself...

the jedi steps FYC album mp3

timemark: 0-0:30 and a bit more

the opening figure that is played by a vibraphone (or Vibe) without reverb and soft piano - are joined by an appregio harp that plays under the music

This figure is taken from cloud city - RESCUE FROM CLOUD CITY when Luke dangles underneath - before the force theme sets in

it could be a coincidence but i think not - Williams does indeed control how he uses the music in the film

3 hours ?

maybe he is not sure and just put on a nearby number or else he did write music to a version of the film where Mark Hamill was not kept a way untel the end ?

or it could be becaurse of revising and extentions of cues

The "foreboding" low figure you refer to in the finale can perhaps be classed as an element of Kylo Ren's thematic material. I'm trying to recall where else it may appear in the film, but there's behind-the-scenes video of Abrams and Williams talking about this figure as part of an alternate take on the opening sequence. (EDIT: Checking the album, you can definitely hear a fraught variation of it as counterpoint to Kylo Ren's descending motif from around 1:10-1:20 in "The Ways of the Force.") I think the development of Kylo's material is rather similar to how Williams developed Voldemort's material in the HARRY POTTER films. There, you had the grounding three-note motif, the kind of dark fanfare motif, and then the full Voldemort theme. Or HOOK for that matter, where you have the scene-setting pirate motif, the more fanfare-like secondary theme for Hook, and finally the full-blown Hook/Smee theme.

(There are, incidentally, a TON of alternates glimpsed between the CD, film and bonus features, so it wouldn't surprise me if the total amount approached three hours.)

This "foreboding" is from empire - i have the sketch for that empire cue and i tried to recreate the full score version - believe me it's from Empire - the figure is there definitely

even though it is used in other places in TFA score it originates from EMPIRE

If it originates from ESB, I've managed to overlooked it. Are you able to recall the cue?

Another great 'Star Wars' score analysis, Ed C!

I really need to listen to this one some more. I was under the impression (initially) that the CD was in basically chronological order, but I see now it's mixed up, segued and shuffled in true Williams tradition. Either way, it's a beautiful listen. smile

Yes remember it's the figure and not the theme

LOOSING A HAND

at the video below is the track - at time-mark 2:50 it Begins - clarinets and harp and celeste and viola plays but the sound mix is not that clear

i can make a MIDI file where it is more clear if you want - and i can even incoporate the FORCE AWKENS figure as overlay to demonstrate

Thanks for the feedback, Williams' scores are always so multilayered and rich, there's alot I've glossed over! I hope more people do analyses of his scores.

Thanks Jenkwombat! The way he shuffles the scenes around in these soundtrack releases makes it necessary to "visualize" the score in a different way that just "reliving the story". I think of it as just kind of like "remembrances", or telling stories of old... ("remember when...").

I think we may be talking about different passages. The figure I'm talking about can be heard most clearly in "The Jedi Steps and Finale," starting at around 4:13 and continuing to play underneath Kylo Ren's descending theme.

Are you kidding?

The Force Awakens is a masterpiece, the real manna from film music heaven to the world of shallow and uninspired scores!
