The "foreboding" low figure you refer to in the finale can perhaps be classed as an element of Kylo Ren's thematic material. I'm trying to recall where else it may appear in the film, but there's behind-the-scenes video of Abrams and Williams talking about this figure as part of an alternate take on the opening sequence. (EDIT: Checking the album, you can definitely hear a fraught variation of it as counterpoint to Kylo Ren's descending motif from around 1:10-1:20 in "The Ways of the Force.") I think the development of Kylo's material is rather similar to how Williams developed Voldemort's material in the HARRY POTTER films. There, you had the grounding three-note motif, the kind of dark fanfare motif, and then the full Voldemort theme. Or HOOK for that matter, where you have the scene-setting pirate motif, the more fanfare-like secondary theme for Hook, and finally the full-blown Hook/Smee theme. (There are, incidentally, a TON of alternates glimpsed between the CD, film and bonus features, so it wouldn't surprise me if the total amount approached three hours.)
